Good post but prices are off for food. I live in orangge county ca and never spent more than 200 a month on food even when I was making over six figures a year. I don't know how one would spend 300 a month on eating unless you are a 6 foot guy who eats all day. Even when spending under 200 a month on food I wasn't able to finish it all.

It would be so GREAT if someone from LA could update this, with all the prices and everything.

People can create their "business plans" according to these numbers.

Thanks!!

Pavel- It's accurate enough. Not that much has changed.

Oh, alright, thanks for the confirmation!

I guess I'll do my plan around these numbers then.

Rent prices are a bit off for me. I do not live with roommates but found an apt studio priced slightly under 1200 with all utilities included... in West Hollywood on a very nice street (some apartments on my street right next to me are going for $3,000 a month etc).

Food prices are off too... I have never spent $300 a month on food even when I was making six figures a year a few years ago. I would be unable to walk and zip up my pants if I ate that much...

I don't have a budget when it comes to food; I spend as much as I can eat/want with no consideration to price (I only shop at TJ) and it never goes over $200 on groceries and I only buy the best gourmet stuff; brie, gourmet pizza, Argentinian shrimp, fresh pasta (ravioli with sundried tomatoes and goat cheese etc) organic etc.

I also spend less than $200 a month on gas event though my car uses Supreme...

Question for Jackie:

Are those prices still the same or has it changed?
How much on gas you spent?
What is TJ?

Thanks

You can find living situations in NY for 600-700 a month in the outer boroughs of NYC. You can team up with friends and stock up on the supermarkets such as Costco or Walmart and buy bundles of food and stuff. You don't need or want a car in NYC (!).

There are always ways to live cheap, but it's hard to know what to spend on what unless you're living in the city. But yeah, around 1000-1500 a month for living, commute and travel is probably absolute minimum for NY.
