Acting in Rural Areas? Login/Join

I currently live in a rural area with mainly schools for electricians and plumbing. Not exactly the best place to find acting classes. The only acting courses I could find near me are in a local university, which will be expensive but I'm wondering if it would be worth it to try it if I can't move to LA for another year or two?

I do not have an affordable way to get to New York for auditions or classes as it is about a six hour drive away, but I don't want to just sit here doing nothing when I could possibly do something to progress. Would going to the university be worth it even if i wouldn't be able to get a whole degree, and it being pretty expensive?

If not, what else can I do, besides reading books and watching auditions/classes online to better myself as an actor and get my name out there?

Btw, there is local theatre here but they usually want people who can sing really well, and while I do have a good voice, i could never belt it out like i have seen in theatre. I feel like i am more of a film actor than a theatre actor.

I am sorry if this has been asked before, but I feel like my situation is a bit unique since I am planning to move to LA in about a year or so.

Absolutely yes to training, but don't go into debt. You should be trying out for everything you can at your local theater. Look into self-producing. Make friends with amateur filmmakers. The most important things are training and practice, and by practice I mean acting in things.

Does anybody know the quality of the theatre program at Penn State? Is it even worth spending the money? I know acting education helps but i don't want to learn bad information.
