Real quick. Go to reproducions.com, enter your zip code for east or left coast referrals and then click on The Directory. They will list quality photogs websites which will list their rates. Expect to pay $400-800 on up for a good session. | |||

$400-800 only applies to NY In LA, you can do well with $250-500. Anything above $500 is for a name or an overpriced quack. | |||

@fictionalsleep -- You can find photographers with decent headshot experience for less than $300 in NYC. It's a matter of checking out resources -- CallSheet, which was formerly Ross Reports, comes out with a list of photographers. You may want to check that out. Also try out jameskriegsmann, he's been taking HS pics at a reasonable price for years. And don't forget Craigslist. On Facebook, more photographers are advertising and setting up pages there. Also, try the colleges -- the art college students are always looking to put pieces in their portfolio and build their experience, and usually have more updated camera equipment and access to photo programs. With more people going digital these days, there's no reason why anyone should be charging $500 800 or $1,000 for shots anymore. Just my two cents. | |||

Wrong forum, but here's a bit of advice that I wish I would have used myself when I first started. Until you absolutely know your type, find someone in the $200 for 3 looks range. See how you photograph, compare them to REALLY good headshots of your type so that, when you go in for more expensive ones, you'll know exactly how you can make them the best. And you won't feel like you have overspent on expensive headshots. FWIW | |||

Thanks ressydm. I've managed to avoid those higher prices for the most part, and I've been happy with what I've gotten. It was just disheartening to see one more thing that's cheaper in LA. But hey, we have subways! The class behind mine in grad school all decided to go with a $1000 photographer for some reason. That should have been a fireable offense for the guy in charge of professional development there. | |||

If you want to get LAUGHED OUT, then by all means go with black and white. COLOR IS STANDARD! Because of digital, color and black and white are the same price. | |||

Actually, what I explained was, you CAN get quality headshots for less than $200 in NYC, you only have to look and do your research. You hustle for that just as we hustle for everything else in this business. Search and research. The lazy ones pay for $1,000, because they figure if they pay more they don't have to do any work and it'll just all come out fabulous. If you don't take a picture well, it doesn't matter WHO the photographer is doing it, I'm sorry to say. I say this based on experience as I've worked as a photographer and a photographer's assistant. As far as your fellow classmates paying $1,000, my mother's voice just echoed in my mind, saying "...and if all your friends jumped off the bridge, you'd do it too?" Just because a bunch are going one way doesn't mean you have to do the same. My two cents. | |||
