Hi there! This is my first time making a website or performance reel.
I'm hoping to submit these to some agents based in NY for some theatre/musical theatre representation.
Please let me know what you think? THANK YOU SO MUCH! Smiler

Sorry, I'm just another LA actor here, not an agent (& completely ignorant of the mind of an agent).

But, I felt it necessary to come on here and tell you, "WOW!" I think you are amazingly talented. You have an amazing voice. It is very obvious that you are a performer down to your inner crust. I also like how you positioned yourself as "America's Palest Boy" (as here actors are constantly being told to "brand yourself!" "know your type!"). I wish you the best of luck and hope you get snatched up by somebody . . . useful.

Ok, so all of this is intended as constructive.

First the pros:
You can sing, boy can you sing. I wish I had those pipes.
You've got a great sense of self, also, on your website, just enough humor, to show people a bit of who you are.

The challenges:
*What's your brand? Palest boy in America is catchy, but it's not your brand as a performer.
**Speaking of performer-what's your goal? Actor? Musical Theatre? You need to be more defined in your branding for both, and realize that your reel says "musical theatre" reel. If I were a film/tv agent (which I'm not) in LA, I wouldn't know how to necessarily pitch/submit you based on your reel.
***So, it's about specializing. Have a page on your site for REELS and on that page, lead off with musical theatre if that's what you love and then have an acting reel after that. Yes, musical theatre "is" acting, but not for the purposes of branding, not for the purposes of film/tv work, any more than a Target commercial should be on your musical theatre reel. It has no place.
****Resume: You say "for a .pdf, email me." No thanks. If I'm in casting, I'm too busy to email you. I took the time to look at your site and NOW you want me to email you, wait for your response. Time is money. Put a .pdf and a .doc link IN your site. In addition, format the .html resume you DO have on the site, so it lines up, in case I want to print it from my browser.
*****The reel itself: It highlights your amazing voice, but the video for the most part is grainy and poor quality. It's 2012-An iPhone will shoot higher quality, HD video...Just get yourself set up in a music room, studio, or wherever if it's not going to be a full production and show that range, show those pipes and do it.

Best of luck.

Don't use this reel.

First of all, I have to wonder how much CD's for musical theater use reels at all; typically the whole idea of a reel is to see how you look on-camera. For on-camera work.

This said, if you want to create a reel for ANYTHING, make sure the technical quality is excellent. This is actually hard to listen to at some points.

Then, if you're selling yourself as an actor/singer/dancer, why ever would you open with a piece that shows you barely moving? And not in a character at all?

Ideally, your first piece would be you in character - a strong character -, singing a character type song (not a general hit like "Let It Be") and moving at least naturally. Not necessarily dancing - though I'd hope you'd have some of that in a few clips too - but showing that you can sing while existing in an imaginary space.

Yes, you sing well. But you'll be up against a bunch of people who do as well (ever watch "American Idol"? "The X-factor"? There's some scary talent out there.) What you need to show is what's unique about you, what's compelling about you as a character, a character singing and moving in a way that suits their circumstances so that it barely calls attention to itself even as it impresses.

And you need to show all that with a technically well recorded clip.

Until you have that, you simply don't have what you need.

I responded to your double post on the Working Actor forum, but I wanted to chime in on what Paladin said.

Having a reel if you want to pursue and focus on musical theatre is not REALLY critical.

It does come in handy if you are submitting for jobs that are out of town, ie. regional theatres, that are not coming to NYC for auditions. I have had friends book solid, paying theatre work by submitting their hs/r and a video reel.

To agents, managers and casting directors in NYC - a theatre reel is not required.

Your site is nice. I think it can be slightly more quirky and colorful and youthful to match your personality. Your voice is EXCELLENT! And you sang "Let It Be," one of my favorite songs. You're talented.

Sorry, Sam did not respond. I love how conscientious you are and I wish I was more like you. In this century, naturalism is in fashion and I find that maybe alittle, in acting your video lacks that. Your singing is amazing, and I immediately stereotyped you when I watched your videos. However, like I said, I wish I had the talent you have and being conscientious.

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the constructive feedback.

I've edited some things on my website, and changed some of the clips on the reel.
I've attached both of the links below.
If you have anymore feedback please post!!! Smiler
