The Life & Times of Tulsa Lovechild is a bitter-sweet comedy that follows the heartfelt journey of Tulsa Lovechild who, at the request of her recently deceased mother, heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma to spread her ashes. She not only has to cope with a trek to America's heartland but with the path her life has traveled. Also headed there is a beauty queen and her madly obsessed boyfriend, a pair of conjoined twins, a former war veteran/Senator/corrupt priest, and a Hollywood actor. Their journeys converge at Bob's Exit 238 American Motel where believing in a cause, selling out, defining a generation, achieving inner peace, and living one's life to its fullest potential at all costs are explored with wit, passion and, most of all love.

Two reviews for the show have come in.

The first comes from LA Weekly{/url] (3rd down):

THE LIFE & TIMES OF TULSA LOVECHILD Bob’s Motel is right off the interstate, but all its travelers are lost. Tonight, its rooms are rented to a flailing Hollywood star (Linc Hand), a beauty queen (Jenny Vilim) who missed her big break, her confused ex-boyfriend (Brett Hren), and a pair of conjoined twins divided over their next move (Kristina Romaine and Addi Gaash). Even owner Bob (Danny Lopes) is a Soviet defector who finds comfort in the zoom of the highway, with all those cars trying to get somewhere. And Tulsa Lovechild (Lori Evans Taylor) is the motel’s patron saint: Her hippie mother (Stephanie Turner) birthed her there in 1968 before renouncing the counterculture to marry a CIA man (Alan Brooks). Tulsa, a 34-year-old perpetual student, has structured her life in opposition to her mother’s failed ideals. Instead of believing in peace, love and harmony, she’s a prickly cynic irritated by her mom’s last request to spread her ashes around the motel. Greg Owens’ clever 1998 comedy has been given a post-9/11 touchup; Tulsa, like her mom, is repulsed by her generation’s war, but is too depressive to vote, let alone tote a baby into a potentially violent demonstration. Meanwhile, a reactionary senator (Kim Estes) speechifies on freedom and founds a cult that trains coyotes to eat nonbelievers. Crammed with miniscenes and megacharacters, Owens’ unexpectedly rich portrait of American hope plays more like a quirky indie movie than live theater, but Kelly Ann Ford’s sharp and sprightly direction overcomes the continual blackouts, and the ensemble is largely first rate. TheSpyAnts at the ELEPHANT THEATRE, 6322 Santa Monica Blvd., Hlywd.; Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m. (no perf Nov. 22); thru Dec. 8. (323) 860-8786. (Amy Nicholson)

The Life and Times of Tulsa Lovechild
HOLLYWOOD- Never conventional, dull, formulated, or mainstream, but always trippy, provocative, offbeat and mind-bending….TheSpyAnts are back with their latest unique production! This company of visionary “chance takers” never fails to take us on a thought-provoking “head trip.” Cleverly written by Greg Owens, we time travel from the ‘60’s (in flashbacks) to the present, on the touching and hilarious journey of self-realization of the brainy but bewildered Tulsa Lovechild. Director Kelly Ann Ford inspires sassy and spirited performances from her large cast, blending the heartfelt scenes with bizarre mania, with just the right touch. Tulsa’s recently deceased ex-flower child Mother (a feisty Stephanie Turner), contacts her from the “other side”, and asks her to travel to Oklahoma to spread her ashes. Lori Evans Taylor is captivatingly compelling as the unfulfilled Tulsa, searching for answers. She checks into the The Box Exit 238 Motel, where she had been born to hippie parents many years ago. The quirky and loveable Russian owner of the place (Bob) played by the always flawless Danny Lopes, is actually the thread that connects every character in the story. And characters they are! There’s Ed, Tulsa’s hitchhiker/T.V. star/ love interest (a sexy and sensitive Linc Hand,) a pair of twin sisters conjoined at the hip (an endearing and funny Addi Gaash and Kristina Romaine,) the riotously ditzy Miss Nebraska, (Jenny Vilim) and her stalkingly jealous redneck beau (Brett Hren), and the shady priest, Father Melvin, (a despicably delightful Kim Estes.) Worthy work too in smaller roles by Alan Brooks, Breeze Braunschweig, and Eric Bunton. Lastly, Brian Barca, (remarkably, in his first professional production) mastered a chilling monologue as a dead Vietnam soldier! Wildly creative costumes by Marina Mouhibian and Etienne Eckert, added much zesty eye appeal to the shenanigans! Edgy tech work all ‘round! This is an innovative, “cutting edge” theatrical trip…Take it! Running through Dec. 8th at The Elephant Theater – 6322 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood. For seats, call (323) 860-8786.

=====

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, and then we'll see you at the show!
