Millions hate Michael Jackson, millions love him. Millions hate Pavarotti and aren't interested, millions love him. My grandmother would have thought Daphne Rubin Vega was screaming noise. I like her a lot...
I don't think it's about "better" as much as it is about subjective appeal.
What I want in a performance I'm experiencing is a deep expression of imaginative truth. But even that's subjective. Some want light fluffy escapism, and that's just as valid. Standard singers, like Sinatra, make me cringe. But I know it's all subjective -- not about judging talent much.
American Idol makes me vomit. It's like Gladiator for talent, no thanks. I'm too sensitive to ever subject myself to the lack of consciousness of some of those judges. It's disgusting. But hey, that's where many human beings are at, just not that evolved yet...
