My children are listed with Central Casting. No, I did not pay the $25.00 and they still call if they fit the breakdown. Recently, they booked my son for a Law and Order episode and he received a SAG waiver and union wages. They are a legit agency for background work and sometimes featured background work. This is a good way for young children to get comfortable working on sets and to build their resumes.

How do you build a resume with background work? I was always told that background work has no place on an acting resume.

The 25 dollar fee seems minimal to me. These companies do often pay a service to manage their websites so it seems reasonable enough. Even the big Print agencies used to have a small fee to be in their books. It's just an administrative cost. The fees would be a heck of a lot higher if it was a scam operation. Good luck.

If you check their website, it will tell you what to bring as a parent. You can fill out the forms at home and save waiting time at the place. When I took my 8 year old dd, they charged all the adults the photo fee but said it was free for kids. I'm assuming some legal thing in our favor. We signed up in May and haven't heard anything, although a friend of ours got a call for her son (same age) to be in a wedding scene in When In Rome. They were warned it would be a late night. I think they started shooting at 9 and left around 1:30am (they were only actively shooting the kids for an hour or two).

Good luck!

This is true, but if you don't have much to put on your resume, it at least shows you've been familiarized with on-camera work to any would-be employer. But, if you've got extensive credits, I wouldn't put any extra, or background work on a resume.

As for the $25 fee, its really not a big deal. My agency in Bmore wanted us to pay $175 to be added to their online database with a $50 a year maintenance fee! I told them no thanks. Why should I pay money when you're already submitting me for work without it? If its only $25 and you know its going to get your food in the door for work, go for it. If you DO wind up getting a paid job, that $25 is tax-deductible anyway! Its a write-off as a cost for an independent contractor using their own money for the job.

A registration fee for all background casting companies in CA is standard procedure. I believe that since Central started in CA, they were just following their CA procedure, although for NY, they were offering it as an option at first. Not sure if it's still an option, but the fee is minimal, tax deductable and it pays for itself with the first job.

$25 is normal from what i hear for registration fees. I think they operate in LA, Colorado, and MD. I'm sure NY but those are the 3 i'm sure of. For someone fresh to the industry i imagine that extra work is a great way to network and see a real production in work. It definitely can't hurt to be on your resume and in fact i think that it's a good thing.

Matthew, have you looked into getting with Pat Moran, or Taylor Royall? Carlyn Davis is also great. Also, since you're in Rockville, Im demanding that you do leagues! go to www.lowt.org
sign up! I will be very upset if you dont. If you want to get some local work, thats the best broadcasting you can do in town! Also, check out auditions at Olney, its only like 10-15 minutes from you!

yo dude i already have all their submission policies taped to my walls. I'm signed up with the actorscenter.org and WILL not miss the league auditions for anything. This week on my to do list is to start browsing for monologues to work on. Do you have any suggestions? also I did just get cast as demetrius in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" wit james gibson @ the dc arts center and acceptance into "Oceantroupe". I'm still searching for another job to help with the tuition payments and am currently 3 books on the subject of theatre and auditioning to add to the 4 that i've read in the past month. I love this crazy thing called acting.

ahhh youth. hehehe. Man, thats great to hear! Congrats on Midsummer! To help with tuition, see if you can work on campus. When I was at CUA, I worked on set-design for like $8 an hour, and put it towards living costs. Its fun, and its great to put on a resume (non-acting).
As far as monologues go, I'd have to know you better to give a good answer. If that's you in the picture, you have an "all-american" look so many monologues can work for you. But, to each his own. Are you athletic? If so, I have a great monologue for you. If you are a quirky kinda guy, I also have a great monologue for you. Sorry I haven't emailed you yet, I've been uber-busy. I'll get around to it this week. I want you to email me your resume, or at least a rough draft of it so I can help you out with it. I'll also send you those monologues I like!
Take care!

Mine should be in there from our previous conversations.

Grant Wilfley had a big open call last week.

Digital photos were taken of everyone.

No one was charged ANY money.

No one was asked for any money.

We have gotten a lot of work from Grant Wilfley in the past.

We are not registered with the current incantation of Central Casting.

We did work thru Central Casting when Bernie Stiles was running it here in NYC and we NEVER paid him any money, and he didn't ask for any.

Can anyone tell me of other background agencies in NYC that don't charge to register? My daughter is SAG but is not auditioning while she has braces on so background is a way 4 her to stay in the business & make some money. Thanks.

Don't ever give up.

In NY, there is usually no fee. But, it never hurts to call them and ask.
