Will dd get tossed, because legitimate agents are submitting their kids? I hate going out and finding an agent in a big market. I can find her one, I've had a couple of nibbles, but does she really need one? Have there been kids who have been hired without one?

I think your question really is important and perhaps a separate thread will provide you with more insight/suggestions.

why don't you make a separate thread - smaller markets are a little more tricky and may require some extra leg work, however, I'd rather see a good discussion happen rather than having a parent perhaps go out and spend $$$$ and hopping on the talent/modeling convention wagon when they get discouraged which some do.

Question..did you try a manager? Managers can perhaps take more time to help develop your child's career and introduce her to agents they work directly with.

I know there have been some very well respected workshops mentioned here with showcases, has your child ever done that before?

try a separate thread cos your question I think is important and you'll get more responses that way and i will always have my favorite book, the best I've seen out there

"Raising a Star" written by Nancy Carson, very well respected Talent Agent. Best advice I've seen yet. I recommend it all the time and very friendly to the east coast and theater, which is rarely touched on in some books. Just an all around very easy to relate to book for parents.

You can order it Amazon or Barnes and Noble, paperback online.

and

http://www.hendersonenterprise...ges/ny_agencies.html

Order the New YOrk Agencies

Recent agency openings-closings, agents, the type of talent they represent (theater/tv/fim/commercial/print/kids/teens/adults/voiceover and what type of talent some agencies are currently seeking. I believe there are some personal managers listed as well.

I'm gonna have to think about this. My husband, who is a very smart guy, came up to me when we were at a big kid expo when my dd was about 8, all excited. Seems an agent told him our dd had a fabulous look and gave him (husband) a torn off piece of paper with the name/# written on it. I promptly tossed and said you didn't give him our name, did you? So no, we would never go that route. She is trained musically, has taken acting classes, stuff like that. I am a little leary of showcases, yes, Madelyn (?) Burns does answer her own phone, I discovered. But my thing is, I would like a manager that is legitimate to check things out. Should we pursue, leave it alone till she's 18? So maybe I will start a new thread, but I guess I'm looking for some divine and honest guidance.

Oh, and I wanted to add that the kid expo had nothing to do with modeling. It was sponsored by Highmark/Blue Cross and it was about health and fitness. Vanessa Hudgens was there, right after HSM 1. She sang a song for free, signed autographs, that type of thing.

This thread and others throughout this entire board are filled with reputable resources, web sites and books. The actors and/or parents and/or industry professionals who have shared their experiences and info have done so, because they were once where you are, researching and learning.

Check list:

Desire to act.

Headshots.

Resume.

Experience - gain all you can in your local area through school plays, community theatre, student films at local colleges, indie films, create your own projects.

If the actor sings, learn the National Anthem, God Bless America, God Bless the USA by Lee Greensood and O' Canada and submit to high schools, local colleges, local and major sporting events and anywhere else the anthem might be sung. Enter singing contests to help gain more experience and exposure. Also make a demo CD of vocals.

Training - acting, improv, dance, vocal, gymnastics, martial arts. (physical ability i.e., ability to do a good cartwheel is a plus)

Have at least 2 age appropriate monologues (1 dramatic, 1 comedic) memorized and ready to go and continue to learn more and build a monologue file.

Practice acting skills daily i.e., work on monologues, pick up the newspaper and practice cold reading, practice tongue twister exercises, etc.

Work Permit. (depending on state)

Coogan Account. (easiest through AFTRA/SAG Federal Credit Union.com)

Passports.

Demo reel or actor slate to upload to personal web site or reputable casting web sites.

Demo CD of vocals if actor sings.

Money put aside in case the actor suddenly has to join a union. (it happens)

Read suggested Acting and Business of Acting books and periodicals.

Submit, submit, submit, to wherever the actor and/or family is willing to travel.

Be proactive! Send out postcards to casting and agents announcing appearances on stage, film or TV. Keep them informed. Get on their radar and stay there with updates of any new performing opportunities!

The results are different for every actor. For some, no matter where they live, it can happen overnight and for others it can take years. Don't give up!

Thank you, thank you. Talk about divine guidance/intervention. Met a couple that just bought a sports team. Not big by no means, but talked to dd about singing the Star Spangled Banner at their games. What a brilliant idea. Thank you!

You're welcome! Glad I struck a positive chord! Just be sure your child sings it well and does it justice!

YW and Welcome to the board S's Entourage! Been wanting to update this thread with a new one, but then it wouldn't include all the great advice from everyone who has added to it. I'd have to keep bumping this one up, anyway!

So, if anyone has any updates or links to threads that need updating, please go ahead and add them here. I LOVE eveyone's input! Smiler

I found something fun and interesting and very appropriate. I'm so tired of hearing "you can be the next Hanna Montana or Disney/Nick Star..

It is SO NOT about that and have to figure out who they are and what is special about themselves.

Just good thread that shouldn't disappear!

Adding on. The info may be here already but just to update.

SAG is a good resource to use if anyone has a question about a talent agency/agent, representation. They do have an agency Dept.

http://www.sag.org/news-advisories

Here is a link to their website and info on young peformers.

http://www.sag.org/content/young-performers

And Bizparentz as well...Info on Managers and Agents.

http://bizparentz.org/thebizne...entsmanagers101.html

IMPORTANT BILL PASSED THIS YEAR to protect consumers from talent/modeling scams.

http://www.sag.org/press-relea...otection-legislation

More info Bizparentz:

http://bizparentz.org/home.html

It's not an acceptable by industry standards to pay in any way, shape or form, for representation. If you have any questions before you take out your credit card and leave a deposit for ANYTHING that you may never see again (deposits are often non-refundable even if you do cancel..WATCH THE FINE PRINT) you can absolutely call SAG and no, you do not need to be a member. there are divisions throughout the U.S. and listed on the SAG website. Chose one closest to your State/City.

Regarding signing of a new law in California. Good info to keep mind when starting out.

http://www.backstage.com/bso/n...ids-1004043702.story

But What About the Kids?
"A new California law aims to crack down on scam artists."

"From 2006 to 2008, the Better Business Bureau received approximately 1,000 complaints and 143,000 inquiries related to acting and modeling scams in Southern California. And the frequency of such schemes—usually targeting child performers and their families, often costing the victims thousands of dollars—has been growing. From January to October of this year, the bureau fielded 78,055 inquiries and 544 complaints....."

SAG has sponsored this bill and stands behind it and has spoken many times about industry standards. I am including this video from Dateline in which a SAG representative does state that if anyone has any questions to please call a local SAG office as I have stated before.
