Thanks to Janet P, here is an important thread on possible mandatory changes currently in progress for NY model and performing work permits regarding child eating disorders.

My 14 year old daughter is eligible for EMC. Can anyone give me the pros and cons of joining. Would this look good on a resume? I know full equity membership can limit you from doing non-equity shows, but would EMC have any drawbacks. She has a large resume including several local professional shows. She has just been cast in her first equity show.

Hi

Bumping this thread up and you MIGHT want to start a new thread to have your question answered better cos it might get lost here. Good question about Equity, we often don't see too many!

To Dreamin' Big:
I would say that if she already has an impressive resume and has done several professional shows, it's advantageous for her to join Equity. It's very hard to join Equity, so she may not get the chance later on. The only drawback is that you can't do non-union work, but if she already has plenty of non-union theater experience, she's probably ready for "the next level," so to speak. Good luck!

I've been wanting to do something for a VERY LONG TIME and couldn't find the proper place to give this shout out.

I think this is the proper thread to attach this to because everyone has contributed their time and experience to help one another out.

WELL HIGH FIVE to the industry reps, the talent managers and agents who have taken time to write really wonderful books to help educate parents before they step into this biz with solid information through their eyes, their experience and years of it!

High five to the industry reps who still hold those OPEN CALLS, no charge to the kids..just bring your "just be as you are, a kid, talent and passion" with you! Those who have eaten the expense of paying for a dance studio to hold the open call and doing this because they knew they had room in their talent roster for new faces and you knew if your child was chosen, there was a good reason for it...and they would try real hard to find them work.

HIGH FIVE to the photographers who start out and put out a note to actors and models for free photo shoot so they can make up their portfolio for their business and website! A win-win situation for both actor and photographer!

High FIVE to the modeling agencies, who STILL HOLD those open calls or free drop offs of portfolios looking for new faces! The TOP ones are still out there doing so!

High five to parents who have helped newbies on production sets when they obviously look lost and confused!

There is too much negativity out there right now and I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU to all the industry reps who are trying to sort through all of this and try their best to get the kids started without breaking into the family's piggy bank!

They are long overdue for a huge round of APPLAUSE!

Well said, Janet, and a special thank you to you, as well, for all that you have contributed and the time and help you have so generously given.

And I would like to "second" Janet's high fives and also say thank you to all the industry professionals and parents who are so giving of their time and who share their insights and experiences to help guide new families of actors and actors in general, as they get started on their journey through the entertainment industry. It's a never-ending learning process and it's so nice to know there are people out there who care and are willing to help. Thank you all! Smiler

Hello, I submitted my DD's picture into Shirley Grant MGT. They had called within 2 weeks and was interested and they call when there is an audition. I was wondering if they only meet with people that are a certain age b/c my DD just turned one and we still have NEVER met them yet!. I know they are legit but was wondering why we never had to sign anything and why we never met them. Also what is the difference between an Agent and Manager?... And one last thing, I heard about other agencies and managers (Marilyn Zitner, as well as others.) and when I google them, they do not have their own websites, submission info. or a way to contact them.... Can someone give me a list of Legit Agencies and/or Managers in the NY area please?

Thank You! Smiler

Mominbiz, I agree with your thoughts. I'd add that this business is a process and not a quick fix business. Just make sure your child is having fun and enjoys the process.

Hello, miley1...exception

Yes, it is true that 99% of the time that there are no quick fixes, 1% being the exception. And I agree with the rest of your thoughts, as they are also mentioned in my first post. Thanks for adding your insight!
