FROM VARIETY TODAY!

SAG heralds law protecting kid actors

New legislation targets talent agent scams

"The Screen Actors Guild is heralding new state legislation aimed at protecting kid actors from scams, such as payment of advance fees for getting jobs and representation."

"SAG sponsored the legislation and worked with the bureau, the Los Angeles City Attorney's office, the Assn. of Talent Agencies, AFTRA, the WGA and the BizParentz org..." read entire article with link below!

Well HELLO! WTG. And thanks to Bizparentz too!

Now...bring it to the east!

NO it doesn't take money to get started. For now, in the east..watch your contracts. Bring them home and read them over good. Watch the refund policies you may lose the refund EVEN IF YOU CANCEL! They can anywhere from a hundred to several hundred dollars. Watch the cancellation policies - make sure you have a few business days to cancel to do your reseach and make phone calls, especially if are handed a contract over a weekend. Pressured to sign..another child will take your child's place..oldest line in the book. Never trust "word of mouth promises"

And thanks again to the industry reps who are trying to help the kids jump into the biz without spending $$$, holding their own open calls and following the acceptable industry standards.

http://www.sag.org/talent-bill...319-press-conference

This is from the Screen Actor's Guild website. It's the Talent Bill AB1319 Press Conference and it's not only a press conference but there are some very good and valid statements made by representatives from this industry as to what to watch out for and why this legislation is so important.

http://www.sag.org/press-relea...otection-legislation

Those who stood behind this bill is just as important as the bill itself. Standards have been in place..this will make sure they are now adhered to.

Supporters of the bill:

Sponsor and Author: Assemblyman Paul Krekorian, Burbank

Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney
Better Business Bureau
Screen Actors Guild
BizParentz Foundation
Billy DaMota Casting
California District Attorney's Association
Marin County District Attorney
Orange County District Attorney
San Diego City Attorney
San Francisco District Attorney
The Walt Disney Company
The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (includes Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Paramount Pictures Corporation, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc., Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., Universal Studios LLLP, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)

Although this bill was passed in California, again, representatives from the industry have spoken quite loudly and clearly and I hope that message goes further than just California.

There is another thread on this board as well.

The theatrical unions are there to answer questions and no, you do not have to be a member to call.

"What About the Kids" Backstage Article

This is truly not just a handful of disgruntled parents. The complaints are real and not just a handful.

"From 2006 to 2008, the Better Business Bureau received approximately 1,000 complaints and 143,000 inquiries related to acting and modeling scams in Southern California. And the frequency of such schemes—usually targeting child performers and their families, often costing the victims thousands of dollars—has been growing. From January to October of this year, the bureau fielded 78,055 inquiries and 544 complaints....."

SAG has sponsored this bill and stands behind it and has spoken many times about industry standards. I am including this video from Dateline in which a SAG representative does state that if anyone has any questions to please call a local SAG office as I have stated before.
