I know it's been said that a modeling permit is usually not asked for, but I'd like to get one just in case. I've read that it comes from the NYC board of ed. Do I need to apply in person? I can't seem to find a place to apply online. Also, we don't live in NYC. We live in NJ. And dd is only 1, so she doesn't go to school. So where do I go to get this?

And for accounts. I went to the website for the Actor's Federal Credit Union to get the paperwork for a Coogan. It has a list of organizations that you must be a member of in order to be a member of the credit union. Like I said, dd is 1 and just had her first modeling job yesterday. She is represented by Generation Model. Generation TV is on the list, but not Model. Can she still get a Coogan? Doesn't she need one? Thanks so much in advance!

You can call for a work permit by calling (212) 374-6095.The State Education Dept is on
52 Chambers St right off the Brooklyn bridge. The permits are good for one year. They are very nice and they answer all your questions.Good luck.

I would not bother with the model permit at all. If you really feel that you need to get one, go to the NYS Dept of Labor website. They may now have the forms for download (they used to only have the performer's permit) but if not, call. 212-374-6095 and they will email you the application right away. You will need a birth certificate and a doctor's signature.

As far as i know you do not need a Coogan account for print. You are working as an independent contractor (on a 1099) and paid by the agency with no taxes taken out.

Others who know more might chime in here.

Just a warning. The NY modeling permit has extremely strict rules that we have found are simply not followed in the industry. (http://www.labor.state.ny.us/workerprotection/laborstandards/workprot/specoccs.shtm#childmodel)

Once you have the permit you have acknowledged that you are aware of the rules and then you are obligated to follow them. We have found it makes more sense to simply get a work permit for a child performer.

You don't need to belong to a union to open an account with AFCU, call them if you have questions, they're very nice. For NY you need the child performer trust account which is a blocked account. They can actually open both for you if you would like.

Congrats on the booking! Smiler

Congrats on the booking! Smiler

That is correct, you do not have to belong to a union to open an account at AFCU.
One correction....NY does not require a BLOCKED trust. At ACFU in NY you can choose to open a blocked account. However, this does not substitute for a CA coogan. If you work in CA, you will be required to obtain a CA coogan. You can get one of these through the LA branch of ACFU via fax. It is fast and easy. That CA account can be used for all work, but the NY account can't be used for work in CA... In a nutshell, according to bizparentz: "in NY, the funds are not blocked. The NY accounts are simply trust savings accounts (UTMA or UGMA), so the parents can use the money for any expense on behalf of the child. Because of this difference, the NY “Coogan” accounts are not acceptable in California (the money is really not protected). In NY, 15% of the minors earnings should be with held by the employer and deposited into the account set up by the parent. The employer has 30 days from the start of employment to deposit the money into your child's trust account."

For additional details, check out the bizparentz website.
Hope this info helps.

Whoops should have clarified that, kip is absolutely correct. We opted to open the blocked account for NY as was suggested by our representation, jut in case the laws change for NY. We did open a separate coogan through AFCU as well, which they are wonderful in helping you out with. Smiler

Mackenziemama, you were on the right track.

The rules are that you do have to be a member of a union in order to open an account with the Actors Federal Credit Union.
However, they make exceptions for children because of the coogan accounts or as they call them "Locked trust accounts". I dont recall what the max age is but if you have a child, you can open the account and be a member of AFCU.

The union you need to be affiliated with to be a member of AFCU is any entertainment union: SAG, AFTRA, EQUITY, WGA etc.

But again, kids get a free pass.

Here's link to the SAG overview of the Coogan/UTMA or UGMA accounts. There is also info on the different requirements for Louisiana and New Mexico, which also require Blocked Trust Accounts.

http://www.sag.org/coogan-law

And here's the credit union link to go along with this thread. http://www.aftrasagfcu.org
The credit union has become the easiest way for anyone I know to open an account. It didn't used to be this easy back in 2000, when the laws changed. I thank the credit union and the powers that be for making this a less stressful task for parents of beginning young talent.
