I'm a bit confused about work permits. I went to the link on the Teen Actors Getting Started post and printed the form but when I printed it didn't have anything on it about school or age or name. Could someone please give me the link to apply for one???? Thank You.

Also I'm homeschooled so what do I put in the school part??

Are you looking for a modeling permit (print) or a child performer (acting permit)?

NY state has a new form (as of 6/7) for the child performer permits. Here's the link:

I was just filling out the renewal for my daughter's child performer permit and it asked me to list all the work she's done in the past 12 months. I had to include the production company, address, name of the show, dates worked, and what type of job.

This definitely wasn't on the one I did for her 6 months ago. I wonder why they need this information???

Yes, thanks for posting that...that is how it is done in NYS. The form is different for CA, which is where Allyb is applying.

Allyb, you should still have a school name. My son is home schooled, and the name of the school is Independence. Now, they did just recently come up with that name, but before that I just put the school district name. You still have to have a school official sign the application, so just ask them what the name of the school is.

When I was homeschooling my son in CA, I had to go to the district office for them to sign and stamp the permit. The labor board would not accept my own signature as his teacher, even though I had an official school name with an affidavit. In CA, the student and the parent must go to your local school district office to have it signed and stamped, unless you are affiliated with another homeschooling program such as On Location Education or Laurel Springs, for example.

Wouldn't it be so much easier to have a national work permit? In other words, parents could get apply for one permit that would be valid in all states for specific period of time. Of course, that would mean streamlining the child labor laws, and that is too logical!

Yes, that would be a dream come true for all parents of child actors. But, since each state has its own laws and state regulations, that will probably never happen.

Well, at least not in my lifetime!LOL

In looking over child labor laws in various states, it is clear that only a handful of states (CA, first on list) have regulations that best take into consideration the welfare of the child actors, and should be the model for all other states. But again, much too logical.

Curious, would you get a work permit for your child before they start working or once you have booked them in anticipation of work?
