Why are all of you so interested in print work?

This board used to be full of great information about kids in acting. I don't understand the sudden switch in emphasis to print, especially as it pays so poorly.

Why are you all so interested in print work?

I second that! My kids will do print once in a while but our focus is acting. Maybe there can be a section for print specifically?

I was going to post last week asking whether it seemed like the board dynamics had changed or was it just me?

It seems like it turned when the Model Child conversation started. A lot of new people showed up during that time and I guess modeling is where their interest is.

Dear showbizhopeful,

Like everything else in this business, it all boils down to COMMERCE. Making money.

The shift toward print work actually began many years ago, when most commercial agencies merged with modeling agencies to co-mingle expenses and gain market strength. It was then that many commercial actors began doing "double duty," going on both commercial auditions and print work go-sees. Likewise for models -- they were submitted for commercial submissions along with the actors. It made perfect sense. Why not create revenue for yourself and the agency inbetween commercial jobs?

Nowadays, it's extremely rare to find a pure commercial agency -- one that doesn't have a division to handle both.

"Whatever works."

I think it's because alot of us on here now, our children are toddlers and getting started in print is much easier than anything else.Getting our kids faces out their on print might lead to other things. "Drew Berrymore" started out in print to commericals and then movies. So most parents with young kids might be following that route. So this thread intrest has shifted a bit.

I'm actaully excited that there is more interest showing up here about print. I keep hoping we will attract more knowledgeable people who have extensive experience with print, so we can all help to point newbies in the right direction.

I agree, it would be nice to have a forum that focuses on print for both coasts. So, maybe someone can start a list of reputable print agencies. Everyone starts somewhere, and print is a great beginning. There are lots of actors that started out in print. Best current example I can think of is Ashton Kutcher.

And, maybe if there is enough interest, backstage (Hello TOM) will create a new forum for Print. Smiler

I agree that a separate forum for print is a good idea since this is for child and teen actors. Since many of our kids are doing both print and acting this has been a great way to support each other and ask questions though. Smiler

I gotta laugh. At one audition my wife walked into the wrong room and ended up at an open print casting call. They agreed to rep my son when I found out that the right audition for a film was across the hall. Needless to say he got the role for the film and was called for print by the agency...... Luckly I had enough headshots to go around that day.

I love those kind of stories. It just shows you that you never know where or when this industry can take you unexpected places. Another perfect reason to always be prepared with mulitple headshots/resumes. Speaking of being prepared, remember those passports people, for those sudden out of the country jobs. It does happen!

There could be more talk of print because of the writers strike and possible actors' strike coming up has slowed down film and television work. My own son hasn't been to an audition in Los Angeles in over a month. He was called for a couple a few weeks ago, but we didn't have time to get to them. He did book an Intel industrial in San Francisco, but they don't do too much film there.
