I'm not sure if this was asked previously, (and I apologize if it was), but if my son has a valid working permit for NY, and gets hired to do work in california, will his NY work permit cover him working there? Or will I be responsible for getting him a California permit before the shooting will begin?

His NY work permit will not cover him in LA. You will need a california work permit. Hopefully production will either get it for you or help you get it because the process is a bit different than here in NY. You would need to have all your paperwork in order.

NY work permits dont even cover work done in NJ. You need a permit for the location you are working in. Good Luck!!!!!!

You will have to get a California permit. Production should be able to help you figure it out. If you search the board, I think someone posted the CA info recently.

If there is even a remote possibility of booking something in CA, I would take care of getting the CA permit and opening a Coogan Account right away.

For CA, it's best not to depend on any production companies to take care of getting your child's permit. That is more common in NY, but not in CA.

CA work permits - For the fastest service, submit directly to the Van Nuys office. Be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

But, just in case your child suddenly books a job in CA and you have not yet applied for their permit, when you arrive in CA, you can walk into the Van Nuys office in person and get your permit. Remember to have the online application form filled out and signed by your child's school Principal or Vice-Principal and be sure they include the school seal or stamp. If the child is under school age, you must supply the child's birth certificate. http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/DLSEForm277.pdf
If it is summer and you can't get the school to sign and stamp the permit application, you must have your child's report card and you will be given a permit good only for the months your child is not in school. Then, you must reapply when school begins.

The Van Nuys office address:

Division of Labor Standards Enforcement
6150 Van Nuys Blvd.
Suite 100
Van Nuys, CA 91401

818-901-5484

If you have a NY Trust account, it will not be accepted in CA. You must open a Coogan Trust account. To open a Coogan Account, which is good in all states, the easiest way to do it is through the AFTRA/SAG Credit Union. http://www.aftrasagfcu.org/coogan_accounts/index.cfm

Hope this helps!

Whoo...that is a lot to take in....Thanks again for the info. The audition was today and it shoots in LA in two weeks, so I should go ahead and start the process just in case he does book. He already does have a Cogan, so that is one less to worry about. I don't know if I would be better off walking in person to get a CA permit (if he should book) or start it now. Will I actaully have enough time to get it before he would leave?

In that case (only 2 weeks), you might wait until you arrive. You can call the 818 number and ask them how long the turn around process by mail is currently taking. They are usually very helpful on the phone.

Fingers crossed for your son! Smiler

Jakesmom-- If you run and get a permit for every state where your son MIGHT work IF he books a job you will drive yourself crazy -- Let production handle it when the time comes --usually they fax you the paper work, you fill it out and overnight it to a company who handles it all for you. Hope your sonsaudition went well.

Mominbiz is always right, BUT, I think I know which commercial we are talking about and in this case production will be taking care of the permits for NY kids if it shoots in LA.

So what everyone is saying, you need a permit for any state you work in!! My son went for a go see for a print job to shoot in flordia so if he got the job he would need a work permit for flordia?? Or is this just for acting?? Thanks

Child Performer Work Permits are only for acting. That is what we are discussing here. I can't say for sure, but I doubt you'd need a modeling permit for a photo shoot in FL.
