I posted in the Working Actors Folder too, so please excuse the duplicate. I just know that many moms don't read that folder, and both of these companies targeted kids.
********** Two Los Angeles based businesses were convicted of consumer crimes this week. Congrats to Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney Mark Lambert for his victory on behalf of consumers!
For all us...a lesson in the perils of using craigslist for "casting". Both of these businesses used the site extensively to lure parents in.
*********** Scooter's Fabulous Flashcast aka Carl Carranza Flashcast Companies, Inc. Scooters Kidz Las Vegas babymodelsca.org
You might know this office as the one with the colorful Snoopy graphic on Cahuenga by Universal Studios. This peachy guy was convicted of false advertising. He had been previously convicted of misleading advertising in 2002 and also declared bankruptcy in 2001.
This round he was caught advertising no cost "talent searches" for babies and children. Parents responded to an ad, went to an "audition" and then were sold a list of agents who were guaranteed to represent their child. I've been told the list cost $1495 and included some kids agents who, IMO, should be embarrassed: Howard Talent West, Daniel Hoff, Hollander Talent Group, Jana Lucker, Hervey Grimes, BBA Models, KSA Models, LA Talent, and Shirley Wilson. One has to wonder why they would be involved with such a guy, especially since he had priors, and none of them really rep babies.
Good ol' Carl was sentenced to 3 yrs probation, and 90 days in jail OR 600 hours of community service, plus $$ to the victims. Also, if any victims come forward by Nov. 5, they an get out of any money they still owe him. Rumor has it that Carranza has moved to Las Vegas.
********** Model Management, Inc Wild Models, Inc Kurt Lloyd Clements 1800 Century Park East, LA
These peeps pled no contest to violations of the Advance Fee Talent Service because they had no bond, and reps are prohibited from selling photos. They apparently signed actors and models to contracts as if they were a talent agency, but then charged them up to $1000 for photo packages and additional cash to be on their website. They were sentenced to 3 yrs probation, 30 days in jail or 400 hours of community service, and restitution to the victims.
Keep your eyes open for these people...I would not doubt they will re-invent themselves and try again, although the new law just passed should discourage that. It's even tougher than the laws they were convicted with.

Thank you for all that you do. I have used Craigslist but we are in a smaller market. I waded through the adult photo shoots, the "redheads only" photo shoots, and I found a gem, an indy about an angel that comes to earth to renew a man's faith. It was sweet, and my dd's first movie. But now, craigslist is a highway for smut.

I found this reply to Anne Henry from Scooter's Fab Flashcast. I agree with a lot of what they had to say about Henry.

Dear Ms. Henry:
Did you really think we would NOT respond to your nonsense?
I was surprised by your so called “press release”. It might have been a wise decision to be a big girl, pick up the telephone, and get some facts straight BEFORE spouting off, as you’ve impulsively did and have dome numerous times prior!
I have worked in this business for 30 years plus and was also a licensed and bonded talent agent myself! I DO KNOW THIS BUSINESS! I started my company 22 years ago to give young new faces a way to be seen, hoping to make this business NOT so elitist. We provide an extremely useful service to the talent agencies we work with. We provide them with industry educated parents, children with valid work permits that are ready to work, and handle the entire parent hand holding process until a child is 18 years old. Hardly just a “list” of agencies as you allege. Our specialty is children under 5, often never seen by most talent agencies. As you may know, (look at some advertising), babies are used in a wide variety of ad campaigns.
What is it that you really do? How dare you criticize and condemn all of the talent agencies we work with! WHO IS ANNE HENRY? The various talent agencies we work with submit, audition and book our kids on a consistent basis; they’ve obviously doing something right. If you were an educated woman, don’t you think a healthy dialogue between the agents and us would be wise BEFORE spewing your HATE FILLED VENOM?
Or, should we realize that you’re in bed with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, and that is where you gathered all of your misconceptions? Surprise!
You have mentioned the new bill (now signed into law), which we believe that the City Attorney’s Office and Legislation don’t even understand the ramifications of. Maybe you should get on your pony and ride through town making announcements about the new law so that even LA CASTING & BREAKDOWN SERVICES might become aware that they TOO fall under it’s guidelines, as do many other valuable services.
Part (2) Scooter’s Kidz CA
I now know the reason you shield yourself with a post office box. I’m truly sorry that you can’t see out of your very predictable, close minded box. It’s time to REMOVE your shield and come out and play with the big boys Anne!
We find it reprehensible that any parent rely on your organization for advice or donate money for that matter.
I’m sorry your kids didn’t “make it” in this business. Deal with your anger and frustration and move on Anne!
I think it’s time you turn yourself in for being a non-thinking pawn of the Los Angeles City Attorney!
Think about what I said (really think, if you can handle it)
I found this response on the net to Anne Henry from Scooter's Fab Flashcast. I actually agree with A LOT of what they say about Henry.
Great letter Scooter's! There's two sides to every story. Henry is not acting objectively.

I found this GREAT letter to Anne Henry at Biz Parentz from Scooter's Fab Flashcast. There are 2 sides to every story and I agree, Henry is not at all acting objectively here. I also checked out www.scooterfightscityhall.com. Both sides make compelling arguments. ***********************************************

Gee, what do you know? Someone who's NEVER EVER posted before shows up JUST to defend a company that's been convicted of a scam! And to attack Anne Henry, who should be given a medal for all she does to protect kids. (It also cracks me up that the letter says "I'm sorry your kids didn't make it in this biz" - uh, yeah, right.)
PLEASE. Do you really think it's not obvious that you ARE from that company?????

You call that a great letter? Sounds like a bunch of whiney crap and generalizations to me. If he knows the business, as he claims to, then he should know the business model he is using is one associated with scams, plain and simple. And if his clients have been so successful, why not name names, give us some facts we can check, not meaningless generalizations.
Nice try, industry insider. You'll find most of us on this board aren't that gullible. Thanks for playing. Better luck next time.
