Hoping someone out there can help. My daughter has a certain song she wants to sing for an audition. I heard there are places out there that can convert the music lyrics into her key. Can anyone recommend any places in the NY/NJ area? What exactly is it called?
Thanks for your help....

Sheetmusicdirect.com lets you listen to, transpose, purchase, and print sheet music. A lovely thing for those of us who need instant gratification.

Shinynickelmusic.com can actually transpose any song into the key that you need it in.

Hmm... thought I should add that the term "transpose" that Drama Diva and I are using, for those who are not familiar, means to change the key.

And "lyrics" refer to the words set to the music.

Also, I tried unsuccessfully to edit my above post to reflect that the sheet music on sheetmusicdirect.com is computer generated and you can print the transposed music online. Looks like individual songs are normally around $3.95 for the Piano/Vocal/Guitar version. I'm not sure how great a selection they have, though.

www.musicnotes.com

They have a huge selection of music. You can find nearly any song there. The sheet music is available for download in any key. The prices are comparable to sheetmusicdirect and other internet based sheet music services.

shiningstar - if you are looking to transpose a song that is not found on the internet services, I have a "guy". Does great work - but not inexpensive.
PM if you need a name. He's outside NYC - but your work could probably be done by fax - hard copy mailed later.

My experience with musinotes.com and sheetmusicplus.com has not been good. It prints out fine, and you can transpose it in the key you want, but when we took it to our vocal coach, he said they do a terrible job of transposing (so it's $5.95 wasted each time he didn't use the music). He's had to chop it up and fix it for audition purposes and then I wind up paying him (which is very pricey).

I found on my own, a great guy so reasonably priced, in NYC while we were waiting to audition at Chelsea Studios last month. His website is www.myrehearsalpianist.com We send him the music (scan it in in the original key) and then he transposes it. He sends you back a sample MP3 file and you listen to it to make sure it's right for you. If you don't know the key, you can call him and sing it over the phone, and he'll figure it out for you. We've called him to go over what tempo to put the song in as well, and then he marks it on the sheet music for you and sends it back - this way the accompanist will know how to play it.

Also, if you have a song that is in the right key and you just want tracks for it to rehearse with, he does both the accompaniment and melody as well. The first time is free. That's mostly what I use him for in a pinch when my daughter has a song she wants to use for a spur of the moment audition and no one to rehearse her. His turnaround is amazing too.
