Hi all,

Can someone direct me as to where I apply for my ds's work permits in the state of NJ, PA and NY? I know you need to have this in order to film in whatever state your child is working. I have looked at the states' dept of social services, but I can not find out how to start the process. We do not have an agent. Thanks!

After a series of phone calls, I have the right information. For anyone who wants to know the US Federal Guidelines For Child Labor Laws, you can visit: www.dol.gov/whd.
I found out that in NJ, you contact the Division of Labor in Trenton. They have a special division that handles rules for child actors in entertainment. It sounds like the "working papers" in NJ need to be obtained from your local high school.

Hope that helps!

We just went through the process with the state of NJ for a film my dd is shooting next week. It is a LENGTHY, complicated process, compared to the NY requirements! You don't get a 'permit' for a set period of time, but instead have to submit all the paperwork for each separate job/production your child works on (and student films and community theater are *not* excluded). If you live in NJ, your documentation (proof of recent physical, birth certificate, ss card, letter from principal during school year) is checked by the Superintendent of your local school district. If, like us, you live outside NJ, then you have to contact the Superintendent of Schools in the district where the job will take place. You also have to submit paperwork to the State Dept. of Labor, and there was one other place, too. I think it was the state's Film and TV Commission.

The first step is filling out the Theatrical Permit for Minor Form:

Hope this helps!

If your child is doing print modeling, do they need to complete this process too?

How long does this process typically take? We live in NJ and went to a gosee in Philly last week. The shoot is 9/29...they haven't said who they're booking for it yet, but if she's picked I wouldn't want this to hold her up.

Not sure but I think it is different for print. I am sure someone can clarify. We haven't had to deal with permits yet as dd just started kindergarten. I think everyone usually helps you along if you need anything. jlslim-was your gosee for Comcast? Any news yet if it was? I know we went last week and were told shoot date of the 29th and 30th that is why I ask. Good luck to you!
