Student films can be a great way to build a resume. He may be able to do another and not miss school--ask about the schedule in advance. Many shoot on the weekends because that's when the students aren't in class and when they can get the equipment. CESD is legitimate.

Hi there! I think it depends on who attends the film festival, but submitting to agents is always a good idea and then put on his resume the movie your child did, maybe you could put in the cover letter...was in such and such film which has made it into such and such film festival.

How old is your son and which film festival? Maybe others will chime in Smiler

A film festival is not really a place to find an agent. It's doubtful agents would be attending. Send a headshot and resume to agents with whom you are interested in working.
Student films are a fantastic way to get on-set experience and a wonderful opportunity to work on camera and with a director. My DD did several student films when she started out. The experience was invaluable. She was already signed with her reps, so we weren't building her resume to seek representation. We did the student films to beef up her resume before she was required to join the unions. She worked on some wonderful projects and we still keep in touch with the student directors.

Building on what kipmil said, you never know what the students will be doing next either. One friend's DD ended up with a nice paid job a year after working with one.

Adding to the others helpful info...

There are many seasoned actors who continue to do student films (graduate thesis films) when they find the right material. It's amazing and very encouraging to see the quailty of work that is coming out of some very gifted students. It's added experience and growth as an actor and can be excellent material for adding to or updating your reel. My DS was fortunate to find one of those quality projects who cast several established actors. This film has been making the festival circuit (been selected in 19 so far) and has also received some awards.

My point is that student films are not only for beginning actors. When the right material comes along, it's worth pursuing. It's also a great way to work with other actors and learn from their experiences as well as working with a crew that will be casting their next project, many of which will be paying projects after they graduate. You never know when you might be working with the next Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard or Martin Scorsese, to name a few, all of whom went to film school and did their share of student films.
