Our kids have been asked to do a monologue for a couple of indie films auditions. And we do them for Diane Hardin's classes.

A friend's 11 year old son has been asked to have a monologue twice in the last 2 weeks. One for a student film and one for an indie film (independent film). You just ever know when a monologue might be requested, even though it isn't that often. It's best to be prepared just in case. Having 2 or more prepared ahead of time, really makes a difference in the actor's comfort zone, which will make the audition process more enjoyable. It's like learning a song at the last minute, same with a monologue. The actor should be able to make it real and make their own so it doesn't sound like it was just memorized at the last minute. As far as types, they can be comedic, dramataic, everyday kids stuff and age appropriate to the actor and character. As was mentioned before, parts from a book or doing great poems like "Casey at the Bat" or "The Song of Hiawatha" also make good audition monologues.

As mominbiz and others have said. It is good to ALWAYS have a few monologues ready to pull out of your back pocket at any moment. If you've been given sides to prepare for an audition, generally casting will expect you to do those. Regardless, you should still have a monologue ready to go.
