I guess the surprise is that they cast Graham Philips as Evan! There are 2 boys - Graham and a boy named Hudson Thames. Graham is so handsome, and he is known for a show on Cartoon Network called Ben 10. Don't know if he can sing. So I guess they went for the good looks! My daughters and their friends think he is so cute...so he'll be a big draw. Evan is supposed to be Jewish, however, Graham looks anything but. The kids thought he looked british (i think so too). It also looks like they cast professional kids (according to the bios available; didn't see all of them though) despite what JRB wrote on his blog that some kids had not worked preofessionally before this. So far I don't think there's much diversity in the cast. I believe there is one African American boy. Didn't see any Hispanics or Asians...doubtful if they hired any kids with visible braces but can't say for sure...and obviously no tall kids were cast. I would think this is the cast going to broadway in all likelihood. I also heard it will be a constantly changing cast as the kids age. There was one girl in the reading who was 15. I don't understand why they would have brought her in to do the reading especially if they knew they wouldn't be casting her in the show. They did take 2 of the girls from the reading. What's strange is that under the comments section of one of Ariana Grande's youtube videos (she was cast to play a character named charlotte), a friend of hers wrote that she was going to be in a broadway show. This was last year long before the reading. So they might have done a lot of the casting even before the reading and open call in February.
They were still looking for Evans back then too. I knew of 2 boys put on hold last month, but not they're not big names like Graham Philips. I guess you have to have a lot of backup.

You don't know if he can sing! Did you do the research? Sounds to me like they went for a lot more than good looks.
From Wickepedia: He is the youngest person to ever sing the United States National Anthem to open a Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball game, having performed it at the age of ten. Stage credits include: original opera "The Little Prince" (the little prince), "A Christmas Carol" with Jim Dale at Madison Square Garden (Tiny Tim), the original musical "The Ten Commandments" with Val Kilmer (featured soloist).
Why must you nitpick every single casting?!!! You are not owed an explanation and the casting is not for you to understand. Your comment "evan is supposed to be jewish, however, graham looks anything but," is just....ridiculous. Come on! The post just sounds obsessive to me. I'm sure I will get slammed for my comments, but I just get tired of the whining about who got cast and the sense that people have been wronged by casting or entitled to an explanation of who got cast and why. This is a business for goodness sakes, JRB is going to cast the kids who he believes will make his show a hit.

I'm with you, kipmil! JRB saw many, many talented kids for this show and certainly chose the ones he felt were the best. It's not for us to second guess his judgement - it's HIS show!
My daughter knows 3 girls cast and is thrilled for all of them. She, herself, is a professional, short(!) 13 year old who didn't get past the first auditions - so it did take more than just that to get a callback or get in. And who cares now? It may have smarted for a day then, but that's what this business is all about. Just moving on to the next thing, and keeping it all as fun as possible! One fun thing coming up - going to SEE "13" at the Goodspeed next month!

There is no jealousy or bitterness here tuff business. You don't know me at all. I'm happy for all the kids. And Kipmil, it's the same old thing - no matter what is posted you jump on it and make comments selectively. If you don't agree with the opinion, then attack the person instead of politely saying "well, my opinion of this is different than yours in that...." No need for incorrect presumptions because you are dead wrong.
I'm entitled to post opinions, and remember, my kids did not audition for this show. I know other kids who did and 2 are on hold, so why in the world are you making such snarky comments. I'm just commenting from what I've heard the vast majority of parents from a certain pool talking about as to final cuts. No one said anything about the kids being untalented. Obviously they are or they wouldn't be there.
From the information I have had along the way from one of the artistic directors who worked with the people helping to cast, he too was surprised at some of the kids let go from the reading. And the amount of kids not seen. But that has always been the situation. It took a lot of people by surprise since they had specific criteria in last year's notice. So don't make a mountain out of a molehill.
Perhaps kipmil some of your posts "whine" about things that annoy others regarding casting, but people either ignore them and move on or are too polite to sit in judgement or critism. It seems that if something isn't paralleling your opinion,it is "wrong". It doesn't have to be. I do know the business very well. I have a lot of family in theatre so nothing surprises me.
As for Graham Philips, the kids know him best from Ben 10 on the Cartoon Network, which was all I said since I didn't have time to do a background check on him so to speak. That's wonderful that he sings, so I'm sure he is going to be phenomenal in the role.
Look as I've said before, I don't have a vested interest in this show, except to have helped a friend navigate the process for her daughter who wanted to audition with her group of friends back in February. I enjoy helping others. When I get an update in my mailbox about 13, then I respond after running it by those I know and who have in interest in. That's all.
I offered as much info about the show that I factually knew, and no one has complained thus far. I have gotten a lot of PM's thanking me for some private advice. If you want to turn this into ugliness that is your prerogative as well as anyone else's. There's no need to at all. Some of your comments and the rest are just plain silly and uncalled for.
If you don't like what you read, you don't have to attack, just move on. Peace.

You're right. I don't know you. Now that I feel that I know you better, I would add self-importance and pettiness to the list of unattractive qualities.

Oh, Tuffbusiness, very snarky - but I have to admit to laughing out loud!
Medavinci, really, are you criticizing the casting of a show that does not yet exist??!
Are you saying that JRB was somehow dishonest in casting kids with performing experience? Or that he was dishonest in auditioning when he may have had casting choices in mind? Was he supposed to start with a clean slate, disregard his own vision, and adopt your ideas about what his cast should look like?
Kipmil is right. You have picked at this process from the beginning.
They didn't want your kid. She's too tall. You're angry. We get it.
Let it go.
And... as to "Jewish looking". I'm not even going to go there.....
I am looking forward to seeing this show make it to Broadway. Congratulations and good luck to the cast!
It does rot though, when your kid grows a few inches, or gets braces that will come off just in time for the dead years! Yes, that's my DD's story, LOL.
It's tough when you work so hard that there are so many factors out of your control--but that's this biz and many others. Sometimes, they just need someone who fits into the costume, as we say in my house.
Even so, we can't wait to see the show!
