Has anyone taken a class with Joan Lynn? If so, did your child enjoy it?

Joan lynn is a casting director right? I'm just curious as to who recommended her to you? I know it's kind of costly.

Yes she is a casting director. only works (casts) Union kids though. My DS took a seminar with her last summer and enjoyed it; he learned some valuable tips for acting on camera (was for commercials). She will call you a few days later and give you an honest assessment of your child. The one-day (3 hr i think) seminar was not that costly.

my ds just took her class last week. It was a 4 hr on camera commercial class. He enjoyed it. Her class was recommended by his agent, and didn't seem too expensive. I did receive feedback from her as well.

Did she teach your son how to "eat on camera"? I hear that's one of her specialties.

yes, they were supposed to eat pizza but for some reason they did not and my poor ds who loves to eat came out happy but very hungry (he didn't eat lunch 1st because they were supposed to eat pizza). They ate a little ice cream though...so if your kid takes the class feed them 1st just in case Wink

My dd has probably auditioned for somewhere around 100 commercials. The number of times she had to eat or pretend to eat in an audition or commercial...TWO. IMHO, learning how to eat on camera should NOT be the hook for a commercial class. You can spend $55 for a private session with Barry Shapiro and in 45 mins your kid will walk out knowing everything they need to know to nail a commercial audition. If they need a little extra practice, you can spend another $55 for a second session. I have no idea how much Joan charges, and I've no reason to doubt she teaches a fine class, but I would not invest a lot of money in teaching commercial acting skills to kids. CDs are looking for natural, real kids. Either the kid has it or they don't. But it's nice to know a few tricks to get the CDs attention and give yourself a little edge over the other kids who might be just as cute and just as natural.

I do know there are people here who have sent their kid to both Joan and Barry. Maybe they will chime in with their opinion.

Thanks for responding. My children were referred by their manager. I don't think she has a website but here is the information if anyone is interested. Saturday, February 21 with DAVID DOAN - CASTING DIRECTOR FROM NICKELODEON KIDS - AGES 4 AND 5 FEE - $175.00 (212) 535-5305 It is a one hour session followed by another hour for the parents. Kipmil - Do you know if Barry Shapiro has a site?

175 dollars for ONE HOUR with David Doan & Joan Lynn? Holy Cow. You can do 6 weeks ( 9 hours) with david Doan at MB's plus get a showcase for not much more.
You can do three hours with Lane Napper and another Nickelodeon CD (from LA) for only 100 bucks.

That is really expensive for just one hour. I second Kipmil. Get in touch with Barry Shapiro. Barry is fabulous and actually does cast a lot of commercials. I have never once seen Joan lynn at a casting but we get sent to audition for Barry Shaprio all the time. Plus, DD has worked with Barry before and he's terrific.

We went to Joan Lynn for a commercial casting one time, so she does actually cast commercials. It was a pretty big commercial, but I can't remember which one. We've been to Barry a half dozen times for castings. Barry doesn't have a website. I don't think he really needs one. You can find him if you google the casting agency he co-owns, Herman & Lipson Casting.

Loved Barry. He was immensely helpful in preparing my DD for agent meetings, which required her to read commercial copy.

Barry gives classes at actorsconnection.com. he is one of the most knowledgeable and caring commercial casting directors in NYC. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON DAVID DOAN. DAVID WAS A SECRATARY FOR JEFF MITCHELL OR JMM.THE ONLY THING HE CAN TEACH YOUR CHILD IS HOW TO ANSWER THE PHONE AND THATS ABOUT IT.
