Hi all,

I've tried searching but can't find the answer to this - does a child need a work permit to be in an unpaid student film? My DD is involved in a project and the director is concerned about doing things correctly and legally - so I thought I'd do some fact finding, if I could.

Thanks for any info!

We never needed one for student films. Maybe because it is like volunteer work unpaid? Or maybe because they don't worry about details? This is in NY.

Thanks, castlerock and s.b.h.

This is a student film in NY - we've done one before at the same school and weren't asked for a permit. But if the kids need a permit, then maybe the student directors just tend not to know that or, as you said, don't worry about that detail.

Anyway, my DD will think it's exciting to get a work permit like her big sister - so I'll do it online today!

Thanks again.

Congratulations to your dd! My son has done a couple of student films and we already had his work permit. I asked if it was needed when I signed the release forms, they said no, but it's work, even it's not paid work, right? Better be safe than sorry. I hope your dd enjoys the experience.

I haven't researched the law, but personally, I would not allow my child on set, paid or not, without a work permit. Having this permit sends a message to the producers that you are aware of child labor laws and they should be too.

Thanks everyone for the advice and info and good wishes! The director of the film has researched it also and says we should get a permit and be sure to give her a copy. I'm very glad that she's trying to do everything properly - it's a learning experience for the university students, too, for when they get out in the real world of directing!
