You can do it either way. The first time you get a permit it's just a temporary one so you do it online and print it right out. I would wait until your ds books a job to get one.

Don't ever give up.

It is very easy to get on line, but why not just apply now? It doesn't cost anything and you will have to get the application signed by the school before the 15 days are up, so why not avoid all the rushing around? They often ask if you have it on the form you fill out at auditions. Ypu may not lose a job over it, but I think CD's like to know you have it.

Not blond is correct (although we have never been asked if we had at an audition) Its very easy to get. I would say be prepared--- get working papers, coogan account and passport ready now so your not running around later.

Do not print out the one time NY temporary permit because it is time sensitive and once you use it once, you can no longer get a temporary. You have to go through the filing process for your regular permit. In other words, if your child books and you cant get the work permit in time, you are out of luck...you cant do the job. So your options are to print the temporary WHEN your child books the first job, or apply for the permanent now so that you will have it in the event he books. You may as well start the process now of getting your regular NY work permit.
Good Luck.

I would say, definitely get the permit ASAP. As others have said, DO NOT GET THE TEMP 15-DAY PERMIT!!! Get the regular 6-month permit. It is a very easy process, it is free, and you will be all set. I usually submit our renewals via express mail. I like to know for sure they got there. More of my neurosis, I suppose! The permits come back less than 5 days after the paperwork is received in Albany. I also do a follow up call to make sure the permits are on the way. Someone is always able to give me an ETA and a promise of a faxed permit, in case ours doesn't arrive before the last one expires, if we have a booking. You might want to follow the permit up with opening a "coogan" trust account. You'll be all set then, should your child book.

We got a temporary permit because we needed one (didn't follow kipmil's excellent advice to get one before starting to submit) and then immediately applied for the 6-mo permit. The applications, both on-line for the temporary and then mailed in for the 6-mo permit, were incredibly easy. I just mailed it in snail main and still got it back w/in a week or so.
