It looks like my ds is going to do a week workshop in the summer with diane hardin. It will be his first and is sooo excited about it. My ques is once he starts these can we use them on his resume and does it make him more appealing to agents and cds? also it seems like she is a good name to mention?

Yes, Diane is a wonderful teacher, after he takes the class you can list it under training on his resume.

If you have not done this already have you looked into him doing student films, they are a great learning opportunity.

I agree with castlerock...get some student films on his resume. From the perspective of an agent or CD, a kid's talent should speak for itself. If they've had some training to go along with a good amount of talent, that will mean something. The name of the coach means nothing by itself. My point is...you can, and should mention training on a resume, but if there are no credits to go along with the training, then, from the perspective of agents or CDs, it could count against you. They might wonder why the training is there, but yet no credits.

i have recently (this past week) just started looking into student films. I have submitted to a couple off of nycastings.com is there another way to find them? He is so anxious to do something and i believe a studnet film would be great with helping him understand more and getting some experience under his belt.

backstage.com has some. But it could be months before he ever books something--the competition even for student films is fierce. You can also contact Columbia and NYU film schools.

I wanted to add that I agree with not having talent to back it up, my son is very talented and I just havent had the free time to do any of this until now. I am grateful for this board becuase with out it I wouldnt know what to do or where to turn. It has taught me alot just in the month ive been on it. I had submitted some of his pics and resumes last night and he has his first student film aud. next weekend at the school of visual arts in manahhatn which we wouldnt have gotten without the mention of the website last night. Just wanted to give you guys"props" for knowing and sharing what you know with others, it really helps!

fanmom...In NY, if given the option, you might want to favor NYU or Columbia student films. They are usually quite professional. Others can be hit or miss. This recommendation is based on personal experience. Others might have a different experience.

...and GL with the auditions!

I agree with kip NYU and Columbia are both upstanding schools -- but with any school make sure you arm yourself with knowledge -- and stick up for your son-- don't be afraid to reschedule if they have auditions during school time, If he books the role, don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions, I have never had a problem with them but I did have to remind one crew that she was a child and needed lots of breaks in between filming (she was the lead). Make sure you get the name and email/phone of their supervisor at the school, and a signed agreement to provide a copy when finished.

And have fun its a great ride.

Couldn't agree more with everything castlerock said. You MUST be THE advocate for your child on these student films. Students have no problem shooting for 15 hours in a row, if that's what it takes to get the job done! If something doesn't feel right, speak up. Remember, these are 20 y.o kids you are dealing with. Many of them are very bright and talented, and some have amazing maturity, but in the end, most (not all) of them are kids. You have to be the one with your own child's best interest in mind.

I wanted to add to all the excellent advice here, that no matter what school or indie films your child might work on, be sure to stay in contact with the director/producer to receive your promised copy/DVD. Unfortunately, not all the students or production companies follow through with sending out the finished product. I also know some parents who have let that slide and not kept in contact, one of them having 3 films their child has done with nothing to show for them.

I'm not saying to bug the people, because sometimes it can take a few months (for student films) to over a year (for some indies) for post-production to be completed, but if you don't hear from them, just drop them a line about once every 2 months or so.

Diane Hardin is great and is known on both coasts. She's a staple on many successful kids resumes. If your child is taking her for the first time, they will LOVE her class.
