I always thought that you weren't supposed to use any sort of tank tops or halter tops in headshots. But lately I have seen a lot of kids wearing them in their headshots. Is this considered acceptable now? Is it different for NY and LA? I thought maybe it was more acceptable in LA because of the weather there and the more relaxed lifestyle. Any opinions?

I never heard that and my daughter is wearing a tank top in her headshot. No one has ever said anything. A small plus is one of her shots shows the "muscles" in her upper arm.

I think this falls under the category of "mind taffy."

Years ago I think it was considered not really "appropriate" but now (as of about 3-5 years ago) it seems to be all the rage in head shot attire. Layering them, or just very plain and simple. I see them a lot too, at least here in LA.

Ever since the advent of air travel and the Internet, there is no "East Coast and West Coast" mentality anymore. Not really.

As I've said many times, ALWAYS WEAR WARDROBE THAT IS APPROPRIATE TO THE ROLE AND AGE RANGE YOU WISH TO PLAY. Fashion changes like the weather... to gain good insights on what kids are wearing, just visit a clothing store that specializes in duds for young people and simply take note of what the mannequins are wearing. That will tell you all you need to know.

"Whatever works."

Great! Thanks for the responses. I know our old agent had mentioned a couple of years back that she didn't like seeing pictures of teens in the cami style tops because she thought it looked too much like lingerie. My dd has some cute tanks that I really wanted to use, so now I feel better knowing that it is acceptable.

So, next question, what is the feeling about wearing tank tops to auditions/go-sees in the summer? I had also heard that CDs didn't like seeing "bare shoulders" on kids at auditions. Is that more mind taffy?

I tend to shy away from any clothing that reveals too much skin, particularly when shooting younger actors.

But it is important to make the distinction between a sexy camisole (risque and adult) and the "cute tanks" you suggested. If your tops are cute and age-appropriate, I see no problem with them whatsoever.

As to your concerns about "mind taffy," don't concern yourself too much with the term. There is only,

"Whatever works."

My 11 yr old son had his 2nd set of headshots done and weve been told quite a few times by different people that its the 'in' thing to dress in layers for the shots.

You can always ask your child's agent how they prefer your daughter to dress. My son's agent had their preferences, and actually one of them was not to layer clothing.
