just moved to NYC from Miami to pursue a career in the biz. I've been bartending for the last couple years, and since i've been up here (about 20 days) all i've done is mass email CL posts looking for extras and what not.

Do you have any training? If not, find a class and register. I've heard wonderful things about HB Studios. Start there. Training is the first step. It's education AND networking.
If you ARE trained, headshots are next. Go to Reproductions and check out the list of photographers.
If you've checked these two things off, register with Backstage, Actors' Access, NYCastings, and Casting Networks (or any combo of the above) and start submitting. Check out SCAM O'RAMA to see the companies you should avoid.

I felt pretty overwhelmed when I first moved her too, mikey. But just hang in there a little while longer, you'll get used to the pace. Just take NotJenna's advice and you'll be on the right track.

This is one of the most expensive careers, unfortunately. Yes, the sites are pay to join. Mandy is free, and mainly has student films. So, if you're strapped for cash, start there.
My theater company is producing a a play reading/networking night series for emerging artists. PM me if you'd like more information. It might be a good way for you to meet people and get some advice, live and in person.
