I'm thinking specifically: is it appropriate for a woman in her 20's to wear a sleveless dress or tank top in LA to an audion (assume the top is classy not trashy)?
I know all the rules about colour and pattern-- I'm not much of a suit "type" (more hipster/ coffee shop/ girl next door) but keep hearing that one should dress conservatively for auditions.
Any feedback/opinions on this would be great. Thanks comrades

An audition isn't a job interview. You don't have to dress up for it unless the part calls for you to do so.
Your choice of clothes should be appropriate for the character you're playing.
The people who are telling you that you should always dress conservatively for auditions are idiots who have no idea what they're talking about. My feeling is - ignore the dumb. They just get in the way.
I love when they have as bonuses on DVDs the taped auditions of the cast! I am always so surprised at how dressed down many of them are at their initial audition! I have two kids in the business and I used to dress them up for auditions.. now, I let them chose their clothes unless told specifically to wear something by their agent. If you see "The Martian Child" on dvd, the kid who won the lead in that showed up in torn jeans for his audition.

Find the color that makes your eyes pop! Then go out of your way to find shirts in that color with interesting details. Not fancy, just not boring. Put those shirts aside - for auditions only.
If you chose a deep green for your headshots, chose similar greens for your audition tops. You know the color makes you look your best, and because you look like your headshot, you will be easier to remember.
wear clothes that you look good in and feel good in, since confidence is very important in this business. Maybe the dress conservatively thing means don't go with too wild patterns that will distract and detract from you. Besides that be yourself unless told by your agent or manager to dress a certain way for that audition which we have been told before.

Depends on the charactor you are auditioning for -- We have always been told to "suggest" the charactor-- So if your auditioning for the art of a pastors wife, a conservative attire whould be good, a tomboy --jeans and sneakers work well.
