Well, I was just wondering about this too... on my birth certificate, social security, everything, my name is spelled Kathryn. However, if I would like my professional name to be spelled Katherine (I like it better... people no longer spell Katie as Katy, and well, I like it better!) What kind of problems would that bring?
Whenever actors change their names (which they often do), the only thing that's really necessary to remember is to always use your correct Social Security number. Uncle Sam doesn't much care what your new stage name is, just that they get their "fair" share.
you can use whatever name you want as your amature stage name. but once you go pro, it is a necessary to tell everyone what you legal name is along with your stage name, for security checklists, for international travel and working visas when shooting out of the USA, down to hotel accomedations...
if you like to, a court order is the starting point in changing all your doucments to match your new name.
