Mandy.com always has a lot of student films. Sometimes you can find them on Craigslist.org as well.

There are a lot of places to look for student projects here in NYC- Actors Access, Casting Networks (whose website is NYCasting.com- not to be confused with NY Castings), Craigslist, and a couple of Forums you can subscribe to for free (ActorsFirstNY through Yahoo and CastingNewYork.com). Some of these have overlap- you might seem the same notices on each site, but there are many other non-union and union notices being posted as well, for both film, theater, commercials and print.

I would also suggest sending a headshot and resume to the school(s) you are interested in, addressing it to the head of the film department. Ask them to keep the headshot in their files. Definitely couldn't hurt.

Good Luck!

You can also submit your head shots to the film departments at the college/universities.

Just a note about student films...They are terrific experience, but remember you are dealing with students. If you are cast it is a good idea to get a professor's name and number because you will be calling them to get your copy of the film, which, by the way, may never get finished. it can be a good experience but it can also be a big waste of time. Choose carefully!

Most of them suck and will seem like a waste of time EXCEPT from the point of view that it is an excellent opprtunity to get practice performing in front of people and thus helping overcome nerves. Imagine how you would really be if you actually got on a set perfoming in front of George Lucas or someone. Be honest, you would freak out. Take your time and get used to being on a set FIRST before you go after the big time. TRUST me on this!!!!!

Excellent point. Get the instructor's name. Make sure the instructor has a copy of the agreement you make with the student which states that you will receive a copy instead of pay...When the student's ask you to sign a release, make sure IT says you are getting a copy as pay. And yes, many of these film's don't get finished but you will get experience. You can always use the dailies for your reel.

From personal experience I found out that film students that need to shoot their thesis projects are the most professional (sometimes even more professional than your average indie filmmaker): I guess that's because it's not some class assignment they could b.s. through but rather a demo reel to showcase their skills once they graduate, so they take it very seriously.
