Get out on your own and read some books for beginning actors first. Go the SAG website and read the whole thing before anything else. Then come here.

a great book to start with is "True and False" by david mamet. It was the first one I read and has left a significant impact on me both as a person and as an actor.

thank you for all your responses, i really appreciate the advice. I will read all the books you have suggested and hopefully be a little less confused about the starting process.

Here's a thread on getting started in NY. It lists several resources that should help.

Even if you've only been in two things, put those two things on a resume, along with any acting classes you've been in, your name, your height, weight, eye and hair color, the range of your voice if you sing, and of course your contact info. It helps to have something to give people with your information, even if you don't have a lot of experience.

Then I'd start taking some acting classes and build up your training, and start looking for auditions. Craigslist is useful (though you have to look out for scams and creeps) - go down to gigs and talent on the page, that's where acting jobs will be listed. There are also tons of casting websites that you should check out. Good luck!
