I am planning to move back to California this summer and rather than go back to San Diego, I think I am going to go up the road a bit. I was wondering if anyone had opinions about the San Pedro area? I can live in military housing there (3 bedroom in a gated community) or I can take the $2500 housing allowance and live somewhere else. I really only need a 2 bedroom since my husband will be in Iraq for the next year (or more), and I want to be able to do theatre and classes, while still living in an area with good schools (for my 6-year-old). Any opinions?

Hello,Do you know where the housing is at? We have a gated base not far from us and its very nice where we live. We live at the edge of land i mean that we are very close to the coast, so we have the plus side of Pedro. Its above and past most parts of town. Then you have the lower parts of San Pedro that I cant say much about. I also have a toddler so the schools are new with me, but he will be going to a magnet school that studies the Arts so I cant complain.

San Pedro is a little bit off the beaten track but it's hard to argue with free housing. The problem is you're going to be spending a lot of time driving back and forth between L.A. and San Pedro. Depending on the time of day, that could eat up a lot of your free time, time that you'd rather spend with your child.
