It's not right for someone to recommend a photographer for you. You YOURSELF need to go to reproductions.com and look through photographers books. See how photographers photograph people like you (ie. skin color, age, hair, ethnicity, etc.). Then choose your top 5 and meet with ALL of them personally to see which one you'd be most comfortable working with.

HB Studios in New York might be a good place to start your training. They have a broad range of courses and are very reasonable. This could be a kicking off point. As for headshots, Eldorado's advice is right on the money. The photographer who is good for me might not work well with you. The meeting with them is important. Gives you a feel for how they work. Get their opinions on what would work best for you.

What a great list. Here's more to add to it.

Glenn Alterman – Author, Career Consultant, Coach http://www.glennalterman.com/books.htm#making
The Actors Center http://www.theactorscenter.org/index.htm
Jason Bennett http://www.jbactors.com
Catherine Gaffigan http://catherinegaffigan.com/index.html
Wynn Handman http://www.americanplacetheatre.org/wynnbio.htm
Michael Howard Studio http://www.michaelhowardstudios.com

As for photographers, that is a personal choice. As suggested, check out some sites and contact a few to meet with. Here is a list of photographers in NY on the Reproductions site.

This is a nice big list of schools in NY. There are many great teachers to choose from. Some of these colleagues I just adore.

Hey MominBiz, love ya. The Actor's Center in NYC went out of business about a year ago.

I'm very happy to see that the large corporate scam schools are left off these lists. Praise the Lord.

There are many really great acting teachers in our great city. But if you don't do very judicious research, you could be in for big, big trouble.

I'm currently taking classes at T. Schreiber, and I'm really happy with them. Their winter conservatory starts on January 26th.

As for headshots, I got mine from Rod Goodman. He has a special running on Mondays and does a good job.

T. Schrieber is good I did their 6 week intensive conservatory there. The voice and movement was intense, but the acting was so so. The teacher didn't really say much that I didn't know already. Work with Terry or Peter if you can I was trying to go with them , but they were booked pretty solid. Next time. Good Luck !!! Or try JBActors workshop.

California P, if some of the acting advice from T. Schriber was common sense, what exactly is that? What did they talk about?

I have "ACTING" T. Schriber's book and I love it! I've highlighted a ton of useful info. Do you think "making a title" of the scene helps acting it out that much?

Those are nice lists posted by wonderfulcow and Mominbiz. By the way, Glenn Alterman has a good book about Acting in New York City. You can usually find it at Drama Bookshop or other bookstores.

Just wanted to add - some of the acting schools posted earlier require that you sign up for a whole 2-year program, others let you sign up on a "class by class" basis, which can be a lot easier financially. It all depends on what you want to do.
