Alright so before I ask the same question again lemme give a little info bout me .. I am 27, male, pretty ok looking, east Indian and like everyone else here have a dream in my eyes ..
It was quite a task to get myself herein LA in the first place .. now that I am here I don't really know what to do!! I have absolutely no one to ask for leads or references or anything .. Going totally solo .. have money issues too to add to problems .. being a non american creates job finding a problem too .. having a non-american accent is the icing on the cake.. but regardless of all this I am gonna try cause this is really what I want to do with my life Smiler
I have gotten some headshots made ( cost me bout ~ 250-300) .. I paid a couple of casting agencies for extra work (~200 bucks) and by a huge amount of luck got an extra's work for a day .. but the most important thing I realised while working as an extra was that it does not matter if I keep working as an extra for the next 15 years because just working as an extra will NOT make me an actor .. I have no formal training in acting so that makes it even more difficult for me to convince someone that I can act!
My real question is how do I get to know about the speaking roles that r out there? Is it absolutely necessary for me to get some acting classes under my belt to convince someone to atleast call me for an audition? If so then which one? there are a dime a dozen acting classes here in Hollywood?! Sorry for my rants but if someone could just even answer parts of my questions I would be really grateful!! Thanks in advance ..

Hello Pulsar81, and welcome!

Yes you are right, training is a must if you expect to be called into an audition. BTW,
$200.00 for background work? Sounds like you got scammed. It should only be about 20.00-25.00 to register with a company like Central Casting, Bill Dance, or Sandi Alessi, to name a few.

Anyway, here is a link that should help. Take the time to read all you can and then check out the resources and read some more.

Good luck!

When I first decided to become an actor I had no training, no experience and no clue how to get started. I went to the library and started going through some of the acting books just to try to get a feel of what I was getting myself into, it helped A LOT! I was able to get an idea of what was going to be expected of me and what were going to be some of my biggest obstacles. When I actually started taking formal training classes I was able to keep up with some of the more experienced students because I understood what was being asked of me. It made it easier to take in the experiences and to learn new things. (recommended reading: Auditioning by Joanna Merlin, it covers sooo much more than the title suggests and it gives a lot of good references for further readings)

First and foremost don't just jump a plane to LA.
Google some local theatres or something in your area. Fill your resume up with volunteer work. Check out local theare websites and attend a audition, even if you don't fit the part- go to see others and maybe get names.

How I started was finding a community theatre in my area and just started going on auditions, talking to the director-say you are interested in getting started, what can I do.

DO ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. From box office, to just moving around props, helping with scene changes, being an extra in a scene. ANYTHING.

Well, to start with, he's already in LA, but it is good advice for others who have not yet moved to one of the bigger cities, to gain some experience and training before making the move. I'm glad you clarified volunteer work, meaning to do any job that is acting or theatre related.

However (unless I misinterpreted what you said), I would not suggest someone attend an audition even they are not right for the part. Part of being an actor is to know your type and the range of characters you might be able to play. You don't want to appear so green that the director or casting director would wonder what the heck is he doing here. But, it is a good idea to talk to the director before the audition and ask questions about different characters or possibilities of working backstage.
