I am transferring as a sophomore to a new college, planning on studying psychology. I have decided to get a bachelor's degree and see where acting takes me while I'm in school.

ANYWHO

I am in the mindset that studying psychology would be a GREAT asset to an actor. I feel that learning the whys, hows, and whats of human behavior would be very helpful.

What do you think? Do any of you have a degree in psychology or taken any classes? If so, did you find it helpful? Just curious...

This is a great idea! Actors need to study psychology, its a part of our craft! I also recommend taking some philosophy courses, and definitely some sociology courses. You'll be much better rounded. Where are you transfering to? American? CUA? G-Town? Anyway, keep involved in the theatre, and go to see as many shows around town that you can, so you can meet the actors and the crew, so when you do graduate, you have some connections. If you're 21, go to Playbill, its a great bar that actors frequent all the time. I have some great books on acting and psychology that I'll pm to you tomorrw. Rock on!

I think there are several stories out there of actors studying other majors but somehow got involved with theatre. That's not a bad idea, just keep learning and auditioning for your school's plays.

I took some psychology classes... never helped me in my acting an all.

But I think it's great to take all sorts of classes outside acting to become a better rounded and more informed person. I also took classes in half a dozen other areas that I've never used in my acting. I even took part as a subject in a few psychology studies.

And as far as acting/theater goes, I also explored directing, lighting, costume design, writing, stage management and make-up.

Theatre is a great way to get started. I just got cast in the oceantroupe's shakespeare smorgasbord. You should stay involved and see some of the stuff. Maybe you'll be inspired, and hit me up if you want to get coffee when your in town.

This thread peaked my interest, so I ended up going to the library and stocking up on some psych and soc books from the library, as that is not my major and have never taken a class... just started reading "Understanding Human Behavior and the Social Environment" (3rd edition haha) by Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman. It looks like a fantastic and all-encompassing read if anyone was interested!
