I only doing EXTRA work because of school. I did about 8 maybe 10 extra jobs and in the mail I received an AFTRA voucher from the last one.
I was hoping by the time I graduate to be SAG eligible, which I have 0 out of 3 vouchers. Now I have 1 AFTRA one.
I'm a bit confuse of AFTRA requirements from their site, would this 1 voucher count towards membership?
What is the main difference between SAG and AFTRA? Once in a union, you can only do work of that union nature right? If SAG, SAG work only, if AFTRA, AFTRA work only? I'm not joining either until I have something more on my resume then extra work, but it's good to know if I'll be qualify or not.
Thanks.

You don't have to "qualify" to join AFTRA. You just show up to the office and pay $1300. So that AFTRA voucher is meaningless other than a record of your employment. It won't do you any good w/regards to SAG. Being a member of AFTRA only matters for SAG eligibility purposes if you've booked a principal role and been a member for a year. Three AFTRA vouchers will qualify you for AEA, however.
You can be a member of both SAG and AFTRA, or just one. Either way, you'll only be able to work union projects(i.e., if you are just AFTRA you can't do non-union extra work on SAG projects or non-union theatre work).
