Time to bring up one of the most common ones again.

Principal with an "a" - not principle

Okay, here are a couple of misused terms that bug me, especially when I see them misused in scripts and books or hear them spoken on TV and in films. I think it just comes from laziness, but what ev!

Lay and lie. When asking someone to lie down, or I'm going to lie down, it's lie. To put an object on the table is to place it or lay it on the table. A way to remeber it is:
People "lie" (they tell lies)
To place is to "lay" (objects can't lie)

Never place yourself first. It's not "Me and him" or "Me and Tom," it's "Tom and I" or "He and I."

Okay, that's it for now. I would go into the whole misuse of the word "good," as in "I'm good" instead of "I'm well," but that would be silly!!! It's all good! Cool

More in speaking, but peopple who say this usually write it this way:

"Pacific" for "specific".

"I pacifically told you not to do that."

I feel like slapping people when they say this.

I continue to see these on other sites and resumes.

Principal - not principle
Recurring - not reocurring
Cast - not casted
Casting Director - not casting agent

I have to agree, Mom. Principal/principle, and recurring/reocurring. Two words that are immediate red flags. To get these wrong, is to scream "I am GREEN".

ha ha! I like this one! For some reason I can't stand it when people say "try out" for a play. You "audition" for a play and "try out" for a basket ball team.

It's a lot NOT alot.

Two separate words. I had a professor in college who would give the class a automatic "f" on a paper if it was spelled "alot".

Oh..that's another one. It's separate NOT seperate.

'An' automatic f. The Professor would give the class 'an' automatic f, not 'a' automatic f. Correct?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Razzer

I dislike the confusion between anxious and eager.

Anxious, like anxiety, implies worrying, or being afraid about something. It means "uneasy" or "apprehensive."

Eager means "enthusiastic."

Examples: I am eager to see Uncle George again.
(I am enthusiastic, positive about it.)

I am anxious about the upcoming layoffs.
(I am uneasy, negative about them.)

Too often I hear people say that they are anxious when they mean eager.

I have refused meetings with people who have said "casted" to me in a conversation.
Here is my list. Not just in the business but in LIFE. Oh GOODY- I have been waiting for this moment for so long!!! Here we go...

really good - NOT real good
it doesn't matter - NOT it don't matter
you learn well - NOT you learn good
addictive - NOT addicting
aggravating - NOT aggratating

Last but not least, even though I have many more I am sure - CONVERSATE is NOT A WORD!!!!! It is CONVERSE.

FYI an ENTREE is an APPETIZER and NOT a main course!! The origin of the word is French and means entry or entrance. Only in the USA is this term incorrectly used. SO frustrating!!!
Pick up a book every now and then - PLEASE!!!!

Isn't spelling fun! Here are a few more.

Discussion not discustion

Professional not professtional

Sincerely not sencerely

Truly not truely

Accommodations not acommodations or accomodations
(When I was little, my mom helped me remember the 2 c's and the 2 m's by telling me to think of 2 people making reservations/accommodations at a hotel who want 2 beds for 2 people. I know it's silly, but I've never forgotten that) Thanks, Mom!

Business not buisness

It annoys me when people say, "I could care less." It's "I couldn't care less." As in, there is no way that I could care less about this than I already do. I found an article on this topic, amusingly enough:

http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ico1.htm

I loved the person who heard people say "pacifically" instead of "specifically." I don't think I've heard that one before, but it's hilarious!

Oh, another thing that irritates me is when people say "I" when they should say "me."

Okay, this one drives me nuts.

I've had several people say to me "I like your face, you have a very homely look"

HOMELY????

I always say "you mean homey"
they say "no homely"
"no homey, because there is no way that you are standing in front of me right now complimenting me by telling me that my face is plain and ugly"

It also drives me nuts when I use vocabulary that people don't know and they try to convince me that a. it's not a word or b. that I'm snobby for indulging in verbiage or for enjoying correct pronunciation and grammar. Like the word ornery. Every time I use it someone treats me like an alien.

Ornery:
1. ugly and unpleasant in disposition or temper: No one can get along with my ornery cousin.
2. stubborn: I can't do a thing with that ornery mule.
3. low or vile.
4. inferior or common; ordinary.

It's a word, I swear.

uh-oh, what if people really ARE calling me homely, lol. That's bad.

Haha I doubt anyone would call you homely to your face. And if that's you in your avatar, from the bit we can see of you, you don't look homely at all. But you should tell them their mistake for their own good - what happens when they try to use that to compliment a date or their future mother in law or something? Big faux pas... Smiler
