As I try to think of lost threads from the past/crashed board, here's one that comes to mind. (as inspired by PB for Presidents' Weekend)

Everyone, please add to the list. I'll start with these.

casting director - not casting agent
principal - not principle
a lot - not alot
cannot - not can not
definitely - not definately or defiantly, etc.
no one, not noone

referred - not reffered

- MIB -
If you can dream, you can do. Making it happen is up to you.

This one happens so often in published play scripts that I start to believe I'm wrong!

Would have. The contraction is Would've.

Would've.

Would've.

Would've.

NOT: Would of or Could of or Should of.

Here's one not of the biz but topical this time of year:

It's Daylight Saving Time.

Saving. Saving. Saving. We're saving daylight.

It's not a bank account! It's not plural, as in Daylight SavingS Time.

That's a losing battle though. The incorrect way is so much more popular that the right way sounds wrong.

Okay, so I'll give up on that one.

Let it be Daylight SavingS Time.

I'm not going to lose an hour sleep over it! Big Grin

OH, I GOT ONE!!

Literally

"JFK's head was almost literally blown open after he got shot in Dallas."

What is intended is: His head was almost blown open.

What exactly is being said -- is that JFK's head was actually blown open . . .because that's what literally means: Actually! Cool

Emmy: When it comes to you, it's OK. You make more sense with your text than most people who try to have proper diction!! You are wise beyond any essayist punctuation!! Cool

Very VERY astute, Fischy: And you know what? I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling kids!! Mad Drat! Mad DRAT!! Mad DRAT!!! Mad AND DOUBLE DRAT!!! Mad Mad

Some of the reasons for that is (a) I have a 9-5 steady gig and I don't feel I have as much time as I did to carefully handcraft my each and every response as I did when I was working as a temp or not working at all; (b)I was writing longer posts and I didn't want to get tripped-up on the bolds, the italics and the "Guy" Smileys; And (c): I got bored of doing it. But thanks for asking, Fischy Big Grin Big Grin Wink Cool

People who say "on set" piss me off.

"On set" drives me up the wall. Notice I didn't say "up wall." There's a one syllable ARTICLE there, folks. It's called THE. USE IT.

Should Kerouac's classic novel be renamed "On Road" so Generation Ahole can get "down with it"?

"When I'm on set...."

"I went to set...."

FREAKING ANNOYS ME TO NO END.

People who say "on set" should get SYPHILLIS.!

JIHAD upon those who say "onset." May Allah subtact one virgin for every occurence. May their goats rot, their donkeys be stricken with Arthritis. Mad

For the last time, it's "on THE set."

THE, THE, THE, THE, THE, THE.

SAY IT!

very interesting observation!

But I'd say "on camera" is okay because when people usually say on camera they're not specifically referencing a particular mechanical device called a camera. (They're not saying they can be seen on that camera right there.) They're speaking in the abstract, saying they're being photographed. It's not "the camera" because they're talking generally.

But with a set, it's pretty specific. There's only one. It's a specific location, where they are. (We wouldn't say "I'm not in office tomorrow." We wouldn't say "I'm at dentist" either.)

So to not use the specific article, "the" sounds really bad, like bad surfer lingo.

If I ever get on tv:

Director: Where is Bob, he's supposed to be on set.

Me: Excuse me, you sound like a fukin illiterate or a day laborer who wandered over the new wall.

Do ya think I'd work again? Big Grin
