I just saw a cute shot of a young girl on the headshots board, wearing a burka.
I've been noticing a lot of them being worn all over town nowadays by Muslim women. What do you think of the practice? Should they or shouldn't they??

This is the United States.

Which means, of course they have the right to wear anything they want to. But after 9/11, I've noticed that anyone that appears radically different seems to get more attention, whether they like it or not. Right after the Twin Towers were attacked, a number of totally innocent Hindu men were murdered by people who thought that just because they wore turbans they were Islamic extremists (in fact, Hindus are Indians who don't even believe in Mohammed). A very good reason not to wear them, but that is their right.

Not long after 9/11, some NYC policemen wanted to wear their turbans as a part of their uniforms. They were turned down, for obvious reasons (can you imagine after a terrorist attack seeing men running around in turbans carrying guns? NOT).

But what bothers me most is the way extreme Muslims force all their women to hide their faces behind veils. It is endemic to the way they victimize and subjugate their women in general that I find so offensive.

I just got back from the Duane Reade on the corner just now, and guess what? The counter girl was wearing a burka!

I asked a couple people in line what they thought of it, and nobody liked it. They thought that it was okay to wear in the street, but that she should wear the same blue uniform that everyone else was wearing while working. Some even thought that it was offensive. One woman said, "This isn't a mosque, it's a ******* drug store."

Interesting.

Yes, they should be allowed.

Americans think they have a "right" to so many things- well, so do all cultures. Something that is not understood, sadly, by many in this country.

All races, all God's people- all have rights.

Yes, they have a right to wear it.

However, I think it's disgusting that their men don't wear something similar to it. I was at a Muslim part of town, and I saw a Muslim man walking in front of his wife, and she was walking behind him. There was enough room for both of them walking together. I will never walk behind any man, and I think that's just horrible. If I was Muslim, I would change my religion in a heart beat, nothing is going to make me cover my face. It be an abomination to mankind for my face to be hidden in cheap cloth.

I know a girl who did that too, she stop wearing her burka, and now her parents dislike what she did. They think she's a whore, when she is far from it, she just doesn't want to wear it.

I am responding to this because I am open to discussions about various subjects. This has to do with culture and the Muslim religion. I can discuss and I do welcome this discussion about a Muslim issue.

Women wearing those burkas is their culture and religion. This is America where people are supposed to be free to express themselves and their religion.

Of course women should wear their burkas. That has to do with their culture and their religion. In American, they have the right to wear it. I don't understand why we would even question whether or not Muslim women should be allowed to wear their burkas in America.

Note: there is a difference between burkas and a hijab (in that picture, I was wearing a hijab). And, thanks, Nicole! Smiler

I thought this was either a Star Wars alien, a torture device, or a confessional booth!

Does it come with a lock and key?

this is America so you do have the right to wear whatever you want.

But for business reasons it may not be the best thing to wear one in a head shot. In a perfect world it wouldn't matter, but we don't live in a perfect world, and a lot of people out there with anti-muslim sentiments will judge you. Clothing has a big impact on how people perceive you. I was actually reading a psychology study about it the other day and the results were pretty astounding. I didn't think it had that big of an impact, but apparently it does.

As pretty much everyone has said, of course people should be able to wear whatever they want.

As soon as we start arbitrarily restricting people's clothes, then we become a version of the Taliban (or we start down that road anyway). Today we restrict Burkas, tomorrow it's something else.

In case you didn't read the whole thread, pretty much everyone here says they shoud be allowed. Why the rage?

READ it all again, slowly and carefully.
