Croissant is from the French, meaning: "To cross over," as in, cross over from tougher bagels to a much fluffier product.
The term, "bagel" is not to be confused with "seagull," which is a bird that flies over the sea. Bay gulls only fly over bays.
A "menage a trois" is a French product that requires three birds, and can be messier than a buttered croissant with jelly. It can also be much more complicated.
