Everyone needed an answering service years ago in the days before cell phones and voicemail. I am not sure why anyone would need one these days. (Is that what you mean by "calling services"?) Ron

Silvermoon sounds like he or she is talking about Extras Calling Services where you pay a monthly fee to be booked regularly for extra work.
They're good if you want to get SAG-E the stupid way or be a career extra. However, when you get an agent and become serious, you're going to have to drop them. You CAN'T have a calling service and be a serious actor auditioning at the same time. Audition notices and getting booked for an extra job are so unpredictable. What if you get booked for an extra job and you later get an audition for a SAG National Commercial that could pay you thousands plus residuals? You can't take that audition because you're "stuck on set" making a little over minimum wage.
The big three calling services are Extra Management, Cut Above, and Booked Talent. There are also some smaller ones like Joey's List. I used to use Extras Management. They're partnered with almost every major Extras Casting Company. When you join them, give them restrictions like, NO jobs over 200 people and NO audience work.
Also, see if you can get with some of those Commercial background companies like Atmosphere (Goldentime for Non-union), Virgo, and Alice Ellis. Background commercials pay better.

Right... Booked Talent. I couldn't remember what the third major one was called. I think that if you want to pursue extra work for any reason, it makes sense to have a calling service. It's actually pretty difficult to secure steady work the old-fashioned ways (ie. calling the central hotline, submitting thru LACasting) and calling services (especially the big ones) have access to jobs that never make it to those postings. That being said, what TRUTHELLER59 said is right--as soon as you want to focus on real acting (not just background work), you will have to drop your calling service.

If you ARE talking about Cut Above, don't worry. I've worked with them, and they are a perfectly legit company and very professional. I haven't heard of any services that are run out of a home.

Jessica doesn't accept just anyone though, neither does Joey. EM and CA are the only ones that do I believe so.
