Has anyone ever found themselves to be "between" types? Im at a place now where I can't quite be hired to play the college guy, and I'm not quite at the young dad or other type. I guess my range would be from 25-35, but my hair is thinning (that sucks) so playing 25 is iffy. I can't play 35 quite yet because I still have a young face. Its quite difficult to see where I could fit in. Is anyone else in a stage like this? Its been hard to get work, and Im not so self-conscious to where I want a wig or plugs for my head. Should I wait it out and see where my looks take me in a year or two and just stick to remaining in acting classes, or should I still go for roles I think I may not be right for? Well, i think I know the answer to that one (still go and say what the f(&*, try it anyway). But I feel I'm at a stage where I'm a little stuck in the middle.

This is a tough situation indeed, but USUALLY casting people are looking for real people as opposed to simplified types. Often, they cast a type they hadn't planned to because he or she fit the ROLE the best...
That said, for this "in between" time I would submit to roles on both ends of your type. I imagine the response you get (and the callbacks you earn for different types) will help you begin to figure out how other people see you. You might also ask your acting teachers, mentors and even peers for their opinions. It's difficult to help with advice on type via the Internet!

Thank you Jackie for such a great response! I'm definitely past the "just out of college" look, and too young to play the "new dad" type, but I guess it can't hurt to still audition for those type of roles. It brings me hope to see you say that they're looking for "real people" as opposed to types. I've been harping on it for a while and it shy'd me away from going to a few auditions. Well, I gotta get my butt out there and go for it. Thanks!

Sure! You never know what they want--hell, THEY never know what they want till they see it. We just cast a guy who we thought was totally wrong for a role before we saw him read it (for my Shakepeare co.). And based on the competition, he was by far the best choice in the end. Who knew?!? I hope you can get some input as well on how others see you--that can sometimes make things clearer...anyhow, have fun!
