Isn't it, umm, funny, how so many of the roles available to actors, particularly women, without agents require super-hotness? How many non-represented, nonunion super-hotties are there!? I recently read a breakdown that called for a woman that bewitched all onlookers with her uber-hotness.

I wonder why I haven't been called in on that?

yeah, i really love how most roles i see ( a currently non-repped actress) in short films and student films and whatnot are for : "model type actresses", or "extremely beautiful", and "looks great in a bikini"

what ever happened to talent??

A lot of guy roles also call for "super hot guys" or "Abercrombe types".

But I'm sure it's worse for the ladies... in fact, I'm sure it's worse for the ladies in represented roles too.

You're living in the real world and nobody ever said it was fair.
Self-pity may be fun but it won't get you a job. Or an agent.

In what make believe world did that ever come first?

The studio system managed to nourish some great talents, but looks were hardly secondary at the time. In the 18th century, actresses were considered little better than whores, and not without reason, since becoming an actress was a great way for a pretty woman to find a "protector". Even Madame de Pompadour, when she was already Louis XV's mistress, put on theater (even her enemies admitted she was great at it) and he once came back early from an event just to see her perform in drag (that is, as a man).

Acting is inherently exhibitionistic, and looks have always been relevant. The fact that actors today can look like Steve Buscemi or even the (to my mind) less than glamorous Renee Zellwegger is more an aberration historically than any kind of tradition.)

Hey Newbie- it's a discussion, not self-pity. George Carlin- may he rest in peace- totally understood shit like this. He could constantly rant about the crap in the world- you wanna tell HIM he's wallowing in self-pity??? We discuss on this board. All matters, all subjects. If you don't get that from the get-go, this probably is not the place for you. Have a nice day- and if you stick around, I don't wanna ever hear YOU with a beef etc. After all, that's just self-pity, isn't it???? Apathy is a curse, not a blessing. If you don't rant every once in a while, you are not human. But I can tell you are definitely a guy!!!!

dude. this is not self pity.. this is ranting over an annoyance that we actresses deal with on a daily basis. I know exactly what it takes in this business and i'm out there every day doing it, and dealing with the frustrations that happen in whatever way i can.

and amen, miss stone.

Yeah, I have an agent, thanks. And who's talking about fairness?!

Yes, there is a difference between RANTING or having a laugh over something and self pity. You guys (and by that I mean you GUYS--notice its all men giving the "reality check") have not spent time searching the nonunion casting offerings for women, have you? If you had, you would see how it starts to get really funny. My humor in this (as opposed to lack of historical contextual understanding or self-pity) should be obvious in my descriptions and, well, the WINKING EMOTICON!
Wink

And by the way, the breakdown really did say the hottie bewitched people with her beauty. It was just funny. Yes, tall, slender, attractive, beautiful, fit, etc.--I get it. But sometimes the descriptions are just too funny not to comment on. I wish I had the time to cull the current listing and post them--you guys would get the joke!

chalk it up to horny filmmakers lol. There is no doubt in my mind that being a female actress is tough. I wish i had some advice to give you but just hang in there. After all if rosie o'donnell made it, so can you.

Ha! Not looking for advice here--just a place to laugh with peers about the silliness of it all--but I think your horny filmmaker idea is correct at times... Wink

Sisters unite!

I am so sick and tired of hearing...
I'm not pretty enough, but I'm not ugly enough, I'm not thin enough, but I'm not fat enough, I'm not young enough, but I'm not old enough,
And I'm NEVER tall enough.... Roll Eyes

While we're on a similar subject (and you GUYS pay attention), I really love those student films and non-union films that want nudity with no pay AND sometimes also want supermodel looks!!! I even had one little punk ask me for a lap-dance one day! I ripped my headshot off him and stormed out. Another director was giving me a copy of my footage, he was married and I swung by his place to pick it up. After handing me the finished product, he looked at me and with DEAD SERIOUSNESS said, "Do I get my reward now?" Another director told me in regards to the shooting day "Be ready to party". Needless to say, I passed on THAT project. Girls please SHARE and let's show these boys what we go through!!!

ugh that is the worst!! every little student film i come across requests a "supermodel" or says "must be comfortable in a bikini" (meaning they want a stick figure.) i mean, most of these people should not be in the position to be that picky.

also, can i just throw out there that pretty much every show on tv revolves around a mediocre looking (often overweight) husband with a ridiculously GORGEOUS wife. SUCH a double standard!

and lisa... i totally feel you. im never tall enough either.... ever!

Ha! In my experience there isn't much change in the bigger/paying jobs either--but at least the breakdowns are less ridiculous!
I once did a commercial where my "husband" was about 45 and my "daughter" was 14...I was 26.

Ladies I feel your pain.....everytime I see a "Ripped Muscular Bay Watch/Muscle Beach Type Guy Needed" (with lots of hair!!) ad.

But...for myself, I find the competition is a lot thiner when you're competing in the 45-105 age range as opposed to the 90210 "rejects" range.

The day will come, to some of you younger actors, when you will benefit from your maturity/experience and not just your cup size.

Hell, some of the greatest female actors of this era aren't spring chicks anymore...but boy can they act!

When I auditioned for Beauty and the Beast at the Kavli for Cabrillo Music Theatre in Thousand Oaks...there was a sign that read..."330 Auditions Scheduled today....184 for Belle....3 for Maurice" (eventually there were a lot more...but you get the idea!!) btw, it was an Equity guest show, but with they much competition...they didn't have to offer that better paying contract to Belle !!

For myself, I told them that I thought the competitions was a bit stiff, so if they didn't mind I'd pass on Belle's part and take a wack at "Crazy Ole Maurice" ...Oh yea, I got the part.

Isn't it true that the only time in your life that you ever really benefited from anything is when you said YES instead of NO?
