I recently went to this free seminar taught by Robert and Michelle Colt. The seminar was to sell their personal development 3 Day Seminar. I'm a huge Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy fan and thus a big personal development buff. I was curious if anyone has actually gone to this 3 Day Seminar and was it worth it?

You went to the one day seminar. Did you find it particularly helpful?

It sounds like you are very into self-help motivational types. Doesn't one motivate you enough? Is there such a thing as an addiction to self-help?

Haha! Sure one does. It's not so much motivation it's other ways of thinking. I was curious if anyone went to pay for the $495 (the price they sell on the day of the one day) and if it's any different from what those three personal development gurus that I mentioned above.

Seems interesting - they mention that they:

effortlessly combine quantum physics and neurosciene with profound and greatly misunderstood wisdom from the East to give you the TRUTH about Acting Success, not the "truthiness."

Maybe they get you to radiate success, and being an actor, it's like that is what gets you work anyway - that self-fulfilling experience of "Yes I AM success" or something like that?

Anybody else gone to workshops like this?

I went to one of these "informational seminars" because I thought it was going to be an actual class, with techniques I could try out in the real world. What it actually was, was an hour of advertising for a 2-day seminar that costs $695, but would only cost you $495 if YOU SIGN UP RIGHT NOW. I found about 10-15 useful minutes, 45 wasted my time. The former actors who are running this business mean may mean well, and the psychological techniques they teach may help get some people off & running, but for $500...for the performer disciplined with their budget, that's dance/yoga classes, voice lessons, headshots, mailings, skills coaching and maybe a therapy session with a performance coach. Or, rent a camera & shoot your own short. Or, put up your own staged reading/ 1-night show. Same idea, more concrete results. My advice is, save your cash and apply it to whats really going to improve you.

EDITED TO SAY: I have not attended their main seminar, but it sounds a lot like the Landmark Forum (which once upon a time was EST) Intro Weekend, only geared towards actors. That too was very expensive, time-consuming and not right for everybody.

I think it's key never to pay anyone for something like this unless they are a working industry professional (STILL working, mind you, not "worked" years ago) or an experienced teacher.

So much of success in the industry has to do with attitude and personality so this kind of thing is important. I have heard good things about it from several people in the industry, who are finding success and named this as a contributing factor.

I will take it at some point. I like what they say here:

"The fact is it's the nature of the mind to divide into pairs of opposites called binaries. Good/bad, right/wrong, up/down, positive/negative. Positive thinking doesn't work because you have to deny and suppress thoughts and feelings that are naturally arising".

Rather than just people who know nothing about it labeling it as a scam, has anyone actually taken the full weekend here and found it to be helpful or not helpful?

No, but one my archetypes did. She ran off with the instructor. The slut.

Since several of you have asked, I’d like to address your curiosity about the 3-Day seminar. First off, this not a scam. The Colts are honest, caring people teaching a technique that has taken them years to develop. In my opinion, it is worth every penny and more.

For credibility’s sake, here is a list of a few entertainment professionals who recommend and work with the Colts. Google them for more information. These well-respected professionals are often present and introduced at the seminars.

As with any class, workshop or seminar, this may not be right for everyone but it has been my experience that over 90% of the attendees come away with a newfound appreciation and love for their own work as actors. Everyone will come away with a better understanding of themselves as human beings. The techniques taught are useful for anyone who wants to get to know themselves better, not just actors.

We’ve all taken acting classes, monologue classes, audition classes and the like. They all encourage us to release our stress and anxiety and find our center and focus. The techniques, exercises and tools taught in these seminars will go deeper than you could ever imagine.

You will start by exploring how the mind and nervous system can work with you and against you. Understanding how anything works is the first step toward being able to accepting its operation whether it be the mind, our nervous system, a turbine engine or something as simple as an umbrella.

Once you come to understand that whatever you resist persists and resistance equals suffering, you will then allow yourself to just “be” and accept being in the moment. Good or bad. And isn’t being in the moment what we strive for as actors? That’s where the effortless part comes in.

Every day as actors, as human beings, we are faced with the challenges of life, such as the stress of getting the acting job, working our survival jobs and dealing with the endless chatter of our own minds. Imagine being able to just flow with the tide and have a “Whatever!” look at life and our careers. That’s not to say we don’t care. It means we accept and allow that the world around us is what it is. Worrying, stressing and resisting only cause us pain and suffering and NEVER helps the situation.

Once this is accepted, you will no longer waste valuable time and effort on things you have no control over and you will begin to be much more productive in your life and your career. As for your acting, your mind will begin to be free of clutter and you will think more clearly. Being more creative and in the moment.

Again, this may not be right for everyone, but I myself have taken classes much more expensive and have come away learning the same things I was taught in my high school drama class. These seminars have brought me to the next, and much more advanced, level of my career as an actor.

I wish you all the very best in yours.

Sincerely,

Joseph Callari

Hi, Jospeh. I hate to judge anybody on credits alone, and I realize IMDB can be flawed. But searching you name on IMDB, I find only two credits listed. Normaly I would not bring this up but it seems like the worshop your are recommending is a little pricey (I can't say for sure, it's just what i'm reading here). If you are recommending this as a working actor, I was wondering why the seeming lack of credits. I'm not trying to call you out just curious.

I like most people on this board are a little leery of new users that have never posted before. Except the one time they post to "recommend something". It happens quite a bit.

Sorry if this comes off as an attack.

I keep seeing these seminars advertised and wondering if I should take them.
I had a feeling it was scammish due to the frequency of them...but wasn't sure.
If it's really just a sales pitch, I'll pass.

I'm big into self improvement, positivity and progression, but I don't need a $500 seminar. I have great books and blogs I read for inspiration.

The key, I feel, is to just get up and apply what you learn.

I have taken the 3 day seminar taught by Robert & Michelle Colt that many of those posted here have been asking about. I have had many successes since I first took their seminar almost two years ago, but it is not magic, you must put the tools and techniques taught in the weekend seminar if you are to be successful in applying what they teach to your acting career. The tools they give you in the seminar apply to all aspects of ones life no matter ones chosen career path. It has helped me a great deal in my acting career, personal relationships, and how I respond to the world and my surroundings.
You are given real, tangible tools, and techniques to use. They actually teach many because they know some people will respond better to a particular method than others. In short they give a lot of options, tools, and you get a lot from the seminar. Robert and Michelle are also very generous with their students and they are known for bringing in industry guests and/or well known industry teachers for a Q&A during the seminar as well. I personally cannot say enough about the seminar that I took from them.
