If SAG goes on strike, which it's looking like we might, does that mean that if you're SAG and AFTRA, and you're working an AFTRA show that you can't film on that because of your SAG status? Or is all production halting?

Unfortunately, I think the proposed AFTRA agreement will be ratified. If so, AFTRA will not go on strike and AFTRA members will continue working on jobs under AFTRA jurisdiction.

The SAG negotiations are another matter. The collective bargaining agreement expires on June 30th. We just don't know what will happen at this point.

At any rate, to answer your question, because SAG and AFTRA are negotiating with employers separately now, a SAG member cannot strike an AFTRA project, nor can an AFTRA member strike a SAG project. Even if you're a dual card holder.

June 30, 2008 = 4 days away
July 8, 2008 Aftra Votes = 12 days away

There will not be a strike.
It would hurt to many people.

Still recovering from writers strike

So would SAG essentially strike on the 1st of July, or wait for the AFTRA votes to come in for ratification? What I mean is, as a member of SAG, after June 30th, will there be any work, considering the contracts will have expired? Is that just a formality and will productions continue until an actual "strike" or an agreement is reached between SAG and the AMPTP?

Hey y'all!

Wassup? This whole union strike dealio has me bummin. I thought we were all one. Then AFTRA walks away and gets a bad contract. It's a bad economy, folks are all scared, and everyone already says it's gonna pass. Sounds like they hope if they say it enough, its gonna happen. Whatever...Steph.

Your insightful analysis leaves me in awe.

But you know what? Seriously - I think you've actually summed it all up pretty damned well.

First, there is no strike. At least...not so far.
But I believe you're asking about the issues currently on the negotiating table. Correct?
I don't think any of us can sum up all the issues that are being discussed. But the big one has to do with what's called "new media" -- Internet downloads, Webisodes, on-line series, and so on. In broad strokes: The actor side says we need to be fairly compensated when our work appears on (or is created for) these new media. The producer side says it's still a new and untried area, and that no one knows whether it'll be lucrative enough to pay actors more.
