Well, firstly, actors have always struggled, and there is never a "boom." Beyond that, yes, L.A. was hard-hit recently, not only by the economy, but also by a Writers Guild strike, followed soon after by the threat of strikes by SAG and AFTRA, creating a devastating triple whammy. We seem to be slowly emerging from the rubble, with this season a bit better than last season. As for your last question, union projects are prohibited from using non-union talent, and the economy has not changed those rules. However, there may be more non-union projects than before.
