Morning all-

This is one of those things that annoy me-sorry. But, why is it that some of these agencies that cast for background work still get away with "charging" a fee for their registration? They can't say it's for film because we all are doing digital, and they can't say it's for administration asst for the paper work when you have to print it out from your own printer. Should I be charging them for my ink that I use to print out their form?

Of course someone will say look the other way-you'll make it up when you book your first job. Whats $35.00 compared to $250.00 plus when working on a commercial? And thats my point. Why pay when you know the agency gets paid when they book people on these jobs. Seems to me we're paying their rent and rental fees of the place where they hold these calls if they don't have a large enough office.

Am I the only one that feels this way....? Where are my pills?

Thanks all!

Yes, it's strange. I haven't done background work, and don't know the ins and outs, but it seems quite strange that background casting agencies can charge for that.

hi FYI

I think you answered your own question. They are paying their rent. That sounds reasonable to me. I don't claim to know anything about this but, are you paying them in other ways (fees, percentage, commissions), or is that the only fee you pay?

I know places like Central Casting charge a one time $25 fee to get into their computers, but it's in no way a scam. No matter who you are, they'll use you a lot and you make way more than that one time fee.
Maybe it's for taking up their time to register when they could be booking? They definitely don't need the money, but that small one-time fee is something people are willing to pay because they make it back so quickly.

I have talked to people who have paid Central Casting and not gotten work.

How do we know what per-centage of Central Casting's income is from fees paid by production companies [which is how casting people are supposed to be paid] and how much of their income is from actors who pay Central Casting registration fees.

We are AFTRA SAG members who have never registered with Central Casting. Advance fees for show busines work are ILLEGAL in NYS.

I don't know if they need it, but I bet they enjoy it!

As for advance fees for show biz work, those are illegal in CA too. They somehow get around that by calling it something else--can't remember the details of this--any background experts out there that can help us out here? Let me see if one of my back stage colleagues can help us out...

I think they get around it by calling it a "photo fee," which you have no choice but to pay if you want to sign up. It's usually just a cheap digital they put on file-not worth $40 or whatever they might charge.

I know that the agency I work with charges a fee but then it doesn't take the 10% like a regular (non-extra) agency. Don't know if that's how they all work though.
