Are you talking about singing or speaking? Did you have a certain voice in mind from a movie or something? Its all technique, really. You just have to listen to the sound that you're going for and imitate it, and keep practicing that.

Yeah, speaking, but I want to voice to come out natural like no effort. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqjXRHBISZs

I don't get it...why is there a video of Lindsay Lohan? Were you referring to the way she speaks as the sound that you want? I don't necessarily think Lindsay Lohan has a "raspy" voice. I mean, I basically talk like that, and I've never considered the sound "raspy" before. Its just a soothing, calm, lower register of the voice that's being used to speak.

Oh I thought her voice was raspy, not extremely raspy, but a little, and I was wondering if you could get a voice like that.

Well, if that's the sound that you want, like I said: using your voice to produce different sounds when you're speaking is the same as using it to produce different sounds when you're singing. You know how in singing there's "head voice" (soprano/legit/opera) and then there's "chest voice" (powerful/belting)? Same with speaking. When you speak with a higher register of your voice, you'll produce a bubbly, high-energy, cheerful tone. When you speak with a lower register of your voice, you'll produce a soothing, warm sound. As you can go to a vocal coach for singing lessons, there are also those that will help to develop your natural speaking voice. These classes are becoming more popular, too. You can also look for a coach that specializes in accent reduction/learning dialects. They could try to help you achieve the sound you want.

Speaking or singing in an artificially raspy voice may be fine for a momentary line or two, but for an entire role, no way. Julie Andrew tried it on Broadway in "Victor, Victoria," and it totally destroyed her beautiful soprano voice forever. Not a good trade-off, in my opinion. www.robertkim.com

Hey Robert, I think that the Julie Andrew's example is a little different from what Mystique was looking for. I think, and correct me Mystique if I'm wrong, that she was asking for tips on how to produce a "sexy" sort of raspy tone with her voice, not one that's multiple octaves deeper.

Hook up with a good voice coach. If you're in LA, Bob Corff is probably the best. Master your pipes first and raspy will be a cinch later.
