I colored my hair for the very first time this weekend and ended up in the E.R. with burns and swelling in my face and neck.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Do I list this on my resume or do I just inform the powers that be when the issues come up?

This is probably the number one complaint with hair coloring.

Horrible reactions like this.

Never list minor medical issues on an acting resume. Not only does it present a negative impression (and in the worse case scenario, a reason not to hire you), but these are highly personal issues that are simply no one's business. Leave them out.

THIS IS NO MINOR MEDICAL ISSUE. People have literally died from reactions to the petrochemicals in hair dye. You are allergic to p-phenylenediamine most likely and should not use traditional hair color to dye your hair. You can use ammonia and resorcinol free bleach to highlight it, or many of the new creme based henna products, such as Surya Henna Creme, to make it darker. Check out http://www.haircolorconcerns.com for more info.

This is not a rarity.

This is why when you decided to color your hair, you either read the directions on how to apply or researched elsewhere. Correct?

I doubt it. Because if you had read the instructions on how to apply from the coloring kit you used, it would state that one must do a skin patch test BEFORE coloring, to check if one may be allergic to it.

I feel bad for what you went through, truly, but this is one for you to put under "lesson learned".

I had my entire head dyed a darker shade and the colorist left the chemicals in too long, burning my scalp badly. Then, she had the unmitigated gall to charge me! Would you believe it? I walked out without paying, but only after giving her a piece of my mind.Mad
