Well, this isn't exactly a health question, but there seem to be a lot of general image questions on here so I'll take a whack at it.

What do you guys think the most versatile hairstyles/lengths are for women in terms of getting cast? Do you think it makes a difference?

I am prompted to ask this because I just had a meeting with an agent who suggested I cut my hair to around chin-length, while I had been growing it out long. It seems like there are a lot of roles that specify that they are looking for long hair, and that seems to be the length preferred by many high profile actresses. Most of what you see on TV (as representations of young, attractive people) is long hair. I guess that means those with shorter styles stand out - or they just not get cast? It seems to me like longer hair generally represents "sexy" and "youthful" to people - though of course Marilyn Monroe had short-ish hair, as did many of that generation...

So I'm just wondering, what do you guys think? Or does it not matter? I just feel like the length of your hair for women can really define what you get cast as. How do you think like women with long versus shorter cuts are cast? It seems to me like shorter hair is often used to denote a more mature age, or extreme youth, or "edginess." The agent suggesting it to me explained it would make me edgier and give me a more defined market, but I am a little nervous about pigeonholing myself into "edgy" roles when so much of what is out there wants "model-type." I do think Naomi Watts and Charlize Theron looked great with shorter styles, though.... Any thoughts?

several years ago, i had a top NYC agent tell me to cut bangs, dye my hair blonde/red, and get new headshots BY FRIDAY (it was tuesday) if i wanted to be considered for representation. WHAT?

i think you have to go with what is happening in your type. my type right now has long flowy hair, so thats what i'm tempted to have.

your type might be different.

but if it was just a meeting, tell agent you'll think about it and research styles and such. then get more feedback from others.

i cut my hair to it's shortest last summer, but i was on tour and wearing a wig so it didn't matter, and it was HOT. about shoulder length...

but then i let ir grow out again, and it got quite long 6 months later. i was annoyed by it in NYC, but now in LA, i miss it. so i'm trying to grow it again before getting new headshots.

hair does make a huge first impression, so it may seem silly, but it can matter.

but short doesn't have to mean edgy or anything, unless you cut it edgy, like with a razor and uneven a bit. shorter could be quite glam!

it couldn't hurt to get opinions from your salon and maybe from others who know you.

Olivia:

One of the other girls my daughter's manager represents used to have long hair. She was so, so sick of having to mess with it, so she had it cut in the inverted bob. She then went out and purchased extensions the same color as her hair. Now, she has the best of both worlds! She can go either way for auditions, depending on what the CDs want.

Would that be a possibility for you?
