First off, I need to know what kind of eliptical machine you're using: PRECORE? (WHICH IS BETTER) or a regular Lifesupport machine? I know exactly why you're receiving pain because you're using your toes to press down instead of using your whole feet flat. BUT, the best way to use an eliptical is to pedal BACKWARDS with your feet flat, abs tight. This avoids pressure on the knee and works your hammstrings and glutes more.
